  • So sad ...............

My step daughter has always been a bit different, love her to bits more like a blood daughter than a step daughter.

Some years ago, aged almost 30 she came out as gay - which we knew anyway - and finally met somebody who became her partner. It became clear quite soon that partner had a serious alcohol abuse problem, mainly caused by her background (comes from a seriously alcohol abusing family, her brother died from alcoholism as did her father) despite which daughter went through a civil ceremony which we all went to, partner was even drunk there.

About 18 months ago, after a series of health problems, partner was diagnosed with brain damage caused by alcoholism, lots of other internal problems and was told that if she gave up drinking, she could have 5 years.

Well, she didn't and is now in hospital, has perhaps a day or two, maybe hours left.

What's so sad is that she was married and has three children, all daughters, and she has been drinking to excess for all the life of her daughters, who are now about to loose their mother. She's been through rehab several times, part of which we've paid for, she's had counselling, just everything we could do to help.

I'm a recovering/recovered alcoholic so really know the problems that she has faced fighting the alcoholism and since I was last dried out in the early 1980s have drunk in moderation, until about a year ago, when I just lost the taste for it completely.

Folks, if you drink more than the recommended consumption levels in units per week, especially if you have a family, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE think of what you're doing. I've heard all the excuses of 'I can handle it', 'I don't have a problem' etc etc but if you exceed the weekly limit or feel as tho your 'need' or 'must have' a drink, please think of where you are and where this may lead.

You want a slow suicide, which my daughter in law has really done, that's your concern and choice but realise how much pain you're inflicting on those around you.

Sorry to hear about your daughter in law Tony.

I gave up alcohol a few years ago, mainly to try and stop my Son drinking and not give him an excuse to get drunk with his Dad. He is still drinking, but seems to have cut down, whereas I have managed to stay 'dry' and feel much better for it.

So sorry to hear about this and you are quite right a slow suicide is what it is. My step son and daughters mum did exactly the same as your daughter in law. She lost so much by not being their mother- she was never capable of caring for them and I met my husband just after he fought for and won custody of his two kids when they were little I used to get so angry that she couldn't be there for them. Anyway two years ago after same brain damage and physical health problems she arrested and died two later in the ICU unit after they had revived her. She was only 42. Such a waste.
Anyway, I hope your daughter is holding up and those three daughters. Such a painful time for everyone. There will be a lot of soul searching from all -there was in our house after the event- as the children went through all sorts of why and what if questions.
Will be thinking of you and yours- take care.x

That is very sad news Tony- I don't really know what to say to be honest- I'd never thought of drinking in the terms of a slow suicide before and it does make you stop and think.
We all jest here on the Vine about drinking and I'm sure that some of us do exceed our weekly allowances from time to time- or indeed regularly.

I hope you don't mind me pointing out a very helpful/interesting site on alcohol? Maybe it'll help some of us cut back a little whether it's for our health, our diet or to save a bit of money.
Maybe the advice may help save a loved one. There are even grants available for anyone wanting to set up awareness campaigns.

Her death is indeed such a waste, but maybe you sharing your sadness will have helped someone Tony.xx

In a sad sort of way, I saw my uncle tear his family apart while he drank himself to death. As a young teen at the time I was old enough to realise and understand the ramifications to a large degree. Was a valuable but painful life lesson. He was a fantastic amazing person when he was sober.

Am really sorry for your family and hers. Thoughts with you all

It's not good Tony, and it's hard to stand by and watch it happen.

My thoughts with you, your SD and the daughters - they must be in pieces.
