  • So disappointing...

    The thread about restaurant portions reminded me of something....

    Last week, Mr OWG and I went to visit his grandpa in hospital after a serious operation. We left the house as soon as we got in from work, and didn't get out of the hospital until about 8.30pm.

    I was starving already and knowing we'd got an hours drive home, suggested to Mr OWG that we make a very rare stop for some takeout food.

    He decided we should go to KFC as it was quite near and he really fancied it.

    Now, at this point I should say that we haven't had take-out anything in nearly a year. If we fancy KFC, then I make Southern Fried Chicken etc.
    So, we were quite excited as you can imagine!

    It smelled great, looked appetising and my mouth was watering.

    Then we ate it. What a disappointment! I never remembered it being so greasy and tasteless... It actually gave us both tummyache on the way back home and I was rather poorly all night.

    So, what have you eaten recently (home grown, takeout, eaten out) that was a disappointment??

    I had a little left over chicken curry and rice, and decided to put it in a tortilla to make it a bit more 'snacky' as I was in a rush.
    The doughyness of the tortilla just made it into mush, it's one of the very few meals I've ever made that I just wasn't able to finish.

    Like so many people on the forum, I hate waste, but had to throw the rest of it away.

        A lasagne in an Italian place in North Wales was the most vile thing I've ever encountered. It was made with pancakes and a bucketful of Tate and Lyle from what we could make out. I can eat anything, anytime, but this...it was literally inedible.

        I think it's the only meal that's thoroughly beaten me.

          I have the same disappointment whenever I eat Fish 'n' Chips (rarely). They just never taste the same as I remember them (in the late 80s).

            Have you tried spraying them with hairspray?

                lol at both of you ^

                Couldn't afford hairspray (I used to spike my hair up with soap a la Billy Idol) and I used to dye my fringe with food dyes: OK unless it rained.

                  My sister was telling me (I haven't verified this) that KFC is no longer allowed to be called Kentucky Fried Chicken because the birds that they have bred for meat can no longer be classified as a chicken, and that's why they're called 'KFC' now. 'Apparently' they're very odd, huge breasted things with tiny wings. Like I say, I haven't looked into it, so may be a load of tosh

                  I do love their coating stuff though, if I could come up with something similar to that I'd be a happy bunny

                    I was disappointed recently at a Frankie & Bennys (treat for my children who love it there) at my 'could-have-been-anything-on-my-plate'. I can't even remember if it was pasta or pizza!

                      My cooking lol. I am in the dllema about what to cook everyday as I am fed up with same old same old week in week out. My OH is vegetarian and doesnt like me cooking anything thats not veggie, and refuses to buy meat, I will no longer eat veggie sausages cos they are gross so I have to find something else to cook for me.

                          We don't eat takeaways much either. The last time I had a KFC (Kaye, Fanny & Clarissa, my girls! ) was 12 months ago. The smell of the extremely greasy chicken whilst I drove home in the car has put me off forever!

                            I love to cook and am fairly good at it, but I get so fed up of the same stuff week in, week out. I will admit to laziness after a day at work and going for something like a pasta bake cos its easy. I have taken a leaf out of OWG's book and am looking through my cookbooks to find new stuff to try. I am now looking forward to shopping for the coming month instead of dreading it!

                              I don't have any "house" recipes, or specialities, mainly because I can't remember a recipe from one day to the next.

                              I tend to see what I've got (pumpkin at the mo) and then look up recipes for it. If something is on special in the shop (lamb, say, or couscous) then I'll look that up.
                              We never eat the same thing every week, because the ingredients are always slightly different, depending on what's ready on the lotty. I cook in batches too, and freeze individual portions, so I'm not cooking from scratch every night.
