  • Shallots frozen solid!

My shallots are in tubs and troughs. I thought it might be an idea to pop them in the greenhouse. I know really should have done this sooner. They are staying where they are due to them being frozen to the ground!

Is it likely to warm up anytime soon you think?

My OH had to use a pick-axe to harvest a couple of leeks on Monday. He was at the lottie for so long I thought I'd have to mount a search party. I didn't because I thought there were two possibilities; 1) he'd frozen to death. or 2) (and far more likely) he'd met the chap from next-plot-but-one and was unlikely to be seen again before the weekend (chap from n-p-b-o can talk for England). When I found out that it really had taken him that long to harvest two leeks I was astounded, in the same position I confess I'd have thought 'b****r it' and gone to the greengrocer's.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

I won't be planting my shallot sets until March ... have you been a bit premature?

i am not sure, can you be, my mum got the shallot sets when she got the onion sets, so i assumed they would go in at the same time? the onions are doing brilliant, even in this cold, the shallots have done nothing?

Plant onion sets mid-March to mid-April
                Plant shallots mid-February to mid-March
(Japanese or over-wintering onions go in late autumn)

yep, that's what went in, autumn sown onion sets, they are all doing lovely, the shallots she got from the same supplier on the same day? why would they be selling shallots sets back in september/october if they couldn't go in, dont they 'go off' ?

possibly, seems a bit silly to me though, cos i shan't buy from that supplier again at any time of year now, anything.

if i recall correctly it was wyvales she got them from.
