  • Seed Saving

Now is the time of year to save your own seed of flowers, vegetables and anything else you fancy.

I have lots of new bean and pea varieties to dry, ready for planting next year as well as all the stuff I swap.

Now, something nice to put them in, try this site

    http://theseedsite.co.uk/envelope.html

Not only does it give you nice seed envelope templates but it also gives all the information you will need to save your own seed.

Piglet, I was only today thinking "I must buy some small wage envelopes to put my bean seeds in". Well done. I printed mine on Premium paper which is a bit stronger than the usual T*sco Basics paper

Just had a quick glance, can you print the seed name in them?

You're usually fine with french bean seeds bendm, however, I think some runners are a bit promiscuous. Having said that, some gardeners have been saving theirs for years and years - probably got their own strain by now. If the originals don't have any characteristics you dislike it's worth having a go. I save yin-yang beans from year to year - great crops.

providing they're not F1's yes. Most legumes are self pollenating ( it happens before the flower is properley open) so they should be OK. I save my own french beans - The Prince and broad beans ( red flowered) and this year I sowed a row of tall peas - show perfection and I only had a few off them as they are all for seed for this coming year.

Look on the Real Seeds website and ask for one of their catalogues.

Don't need a pen with these, and they're free, so they don't cost a packet(sic)!
They also print ok in greyscale, I know I've tried!

They'd need to be editable...! Bit "American mush" aren't they?!
