  • Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness...

    To Autumn by Keats:

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness...

I've had this phrase from in my head now for about a week and it really is a wonderful time of the year.

There is a huge bounty of things ripe for picking in the hedgerows. I have picked enough blackberries for two batches of bramble jelly, the cobnuts are just about ready to eat. There are masses of wild plums and sloes along the dog walk. Elderberries and rose-hips just waiting to be turned into wine.

I love all the seasons but this is a particularly good time of the year for those of us who like to forage and get "stuff" for free

Sorry to wax lyrical but it's often the simple pleasures that are the best.

Not too much longer before we will be thinking about sloe's for gin, brandy, vodka & crab apples to set your fruit jellies & jams

Interestingly I picked a load of sloes today for the freezer. One of "our farmers" said that I could go into his field to pick blackberries and there was a sloe bush full of berries - well, it would have been rude not to

My fave season too. A time of golden light and new beginnings.

Trouble is I always associate it with back to school/ work. Do love crisp mornings and sunny afternoons. I start to get the urge to start clearing away summer bedding etc.

I'm just the same! It suddenly smells like the end of summer, time to get busy.

I usually manage to leave the bedding until the first frost, but if it takes too long I find myself urging the weatherman to forecast a cold snap so I can get finished.

I'm not ready for autumn yet. Not had enough swims! It's unseasonally nippy here at the moment - less hardy folks here on holiday are doing a lot of complaining - just get in and shut up! Gets the blood circulating nicely!

Autumn does have a scent all its own, doesn't it? As the leaves start to turn, particularly poplars, the scent they give out couldn't be mistaken for any other time of year. And you can smell apples, especially crab apples, long before you get near the tree. With the early morning nip in the air, and the gentle afternoon warmth of the sun, Autumn is a lovely season.
