  • School Taken Nieces phone off her

Rightly or wrongly my niece has had her mobile taken off her for using it in class, I am not clear of the exact circumstances. They took it on monday and told her she could have it back next term but have relented and said she could have it back tomorrow. I know she shouldnt have used it and more than likely has been warned, but are they allowed to keep it for so long, If it was my daughter I would have phoned the school and asked if I could fetch it myself and not allow her to bring it into school and probably would have put some sort of punishment in place myself.

I had a catapult confiscated once when I was at school. I never got it back. I shouldn't have been using that either.

    Rules is rules.

If we didn't have rules, where would we be?

Its not the fact they have taken it off her, I agree, but are they right to keep it for a week.

It will depend on the school and what rules they have set down for their students Jackie. If they have a 'lose it for a week' or 'lose it till the end of term' rule, then your niece will have known what she was getting in to. It also may depend on whether this was a first offence, or there had been trouble with this specific class who had all been warned many times. Until you know the facts, who can judge - and you won't get the whole story from your niece either! At the end of the day, even if you disagree, what can you do except stoke up her 'it's not fair' reaction which may prevent her from learning what may be a valuable lesson in life.

In my day, it would have gone in the bin, never to be seen again. Maybe in your day as well Jackie or maybe not.

Its a tricky one, because persumably she has a phone for security as much as for nattering to friends.

Clearly she shouldn't have been using it in class, and I would never condone that, but what if something happened to her on the way home and she needed to call someone urgently.

If the school's policy is to return confiscated stuff the following term, and this has been approved by the governors and not queried by parents at general meetings then they are entitled, I'd have said. I have every sympathy with people trying to teach kids who are fiddling with their phones, ipods, mp3s, or whatever.

We all got home, in the olden days, Becki. People get phobias if they're not carrying their phones these days.

My daughter (14) has her mobile with her at all times.
I have no problem with it being confiscated during school time.
But if it ever happened to her and was not returned at the end of the school day (especially now its dark around leaving time),then I would be very concerned over the implications.

Very true, and I'm one of those that managed to get home from school everyday without incident, but there are some real nutters out there, or what if she fell over and hurt herself. In my early twenties, I used to go horse riding round country lanes and bridlepaths on my own, and I always kept my phone with me - what if the horse spooked, threw me in a hedge and scarpered for home, leaving me in the middle of nowhere.

I just think confiscating a phone for such a long time does have other implications.

                            I guess you'd have had a near-life experience!

Call me psychotic, but I can't help but think a little bit of peril is character building. We created a thread a while ago all about scars, do you remember how popular it was and how many stories people had to tell about them?
I think wrapping kids in cotton-wool shields them from too many of life's necassary experiences.
Probably an extreme view as I'm sure there's 'protecting children' and 'PROTECTING CHILDREN'. Food for thought I suppose.

Makes me wonder how we ever managed without mobile phones.
