  • Scarlet Fever?

I'm feeling pretty guilty now. DD had a serious bout of tonsillitis starting last Monday (went in to school), and she got antibiotics which finished yesterday. Really she might have been well enough to go back to school, but I let her stay off although she had to go back today so her EMA wasn't affected. (Over 5 days off and it stops, which would also affect her £100 bonus. Seems a bit unfair when she even had a medical certificate for when she sat her exam last Monday).
Anyway today, she came down and showed me this rash on her arms. She said it wasn't particulary itchy and she felt fine, so I let her go in.
She has had chicken pox, immunised against rubella and measles, so I couldn't think of anything it could be. We both thought of food allergy, but couldn't come up with anything she's eaten different to normal.

Since then I googled tonsillitis and rash and came up with scarlet fever, although it seems strange the rash came out AFTER finishing treatment with antibiotics. It also usually starts on the body, but she was clear there. I have phoned the doctor and waiting to hear back, but I now feel bad in case I've let her go in with an infectious disease
I suppose on the plus side, if she gets registered in today, she can have more authorised time off without losing her money.

Ds had scarlet fever a couple of months back...the rash was raised & quite rough ...almost like sandpaper. He didn't feel particularly ill with it...just had a very lose tummy & got tired really quick...but inbetween the bouts of tiredness was bouncing off the walls! He then went on to have another rash after the antibiotics finished which I'm still convinced was a reaction to the amoxycillin, but the Dr we saw said it was an allergic reaction to the previous virus.
(DD had the EXACT same rash about 6 months before & the doc that saw her said it was an allergic reaction to Amoxycillin...apparrently it occurs between 7-10 days after the 1st dose of amoxycillin)If it is the latter...be prepared for a really scary rash...it spread all over & was bright red & blotchy...but apparently harmles(??)& my two both got over it in about a week & weren't actually ill with it.If you google it I think it's called an Amoxycillin rash & isn't actually an allergy.
Hope your daughter's O.K...& hope this post doesn't read as scaremongering...tis honestly meant to try & put your mind at ease...like I said although the rash looked pretty awful they had no other side effects!

She did have amoxycillin, and a very high dose because of the severity of the tonsillitis. Although she's had it before (amoxycillin I mean) every time she's had tonsillitis, it could be that this was just so much she's reacted (hopefully). It is 8 days after she first started the course. I'd rather it be allergy than anything else, especially if there's no other symptoms. Although being 16 she'll feel pretty self concious
Another thing that did seem strange, the rash was over the palms of her hands as well as the backs. I've never seem anyone with a rash there before, which is perhaps another point against scarlet fever.

i seem to remember when son had it that after about a week the skin peeled on his hands and feet, ..... i sent him to school with it though, didn't have a rash when i sent him, just a sore throat, they rang me at lunchtime and said come get him his temp is 102 ...... it's characterised by a very high temp, but i'd pop to the docs later to make sure.

I had scarletina which is what you commonly get these days instead of scarlet fever. and the rash was quite itchy but not too bad, raging temp and felt generally very ill. Only lasted a week or so though.

My son came out in 'hives' as a reaction to a virus he had, big blotches all over him and they said he'd reacted to a throat infection.
