    Save our Ugly Veg

    How barking is this for an EU ruling!

    Sainsbury's planned on selling 'ugly' veg - that is veg not meeting the EU regulations for (get this!!) looks, at a vastly reduced price......
    - cheap food
    - good food not going back into the ground cos it isn't pretty

    ...but, and here's the crap - Store managers were told they faced individual criminal records if they put such food on sale.....

      Good job were not trying to be more green with our world and were not in a credit crunch or there arent millions of starving people all over the world or this kind of s**t would really p**s me off!!

        Done - I read about them offering the ugly veg on Garden Organic, but didn't think they would get into trouble for it. What the heck is this country coming to?

            I've voted, and also sent an email asking if they have a Petition to No. 10 or anything that we can sign too. I've never heard anything so ridiculous in my life! I bet the inspectors aren't going round all the French/Italian/Spanish markets measuring the veg and checking it's shapeliness!!

              Of course - here in the UK we slavishly adhere to the 'nth degree each and every article handed down by the EU. We should adopt the French attitude here and just do what we want to for the sake of our own industries and farmers.

              A few years back Asda were going to sell weeny fruits especially for kids - garden gang range - and I remember that the fruits were deemed too small to sell - can't quite figure it - if you see it, consider it value for money and want to buy why should you be stopped?

              Anyway they were forced to take off sale and were not even allowed to GIVE IT AWAY FREE and the consignment was wasted.

              A fate that much EU regulation should enjoy imho.

                ugly veg can be put to a myriad uses if looks are all that 'you' care about...
                - soup kitchens for the homeless
                - sold at a very very cheap price to the unemployed
                - added to hospital food to save NHS funds
                - sold to care homes, elder people have more sense!
                - shipped out to countries where people are truly starving
                - [add your ideas here] and we'll send 'em as a collective.....

                  if i couldn't eat my ugl;y veg........ i would have had absolutely a total of one carrot so far lol ....... to me they have been beautiful ...... however many legs and dangly bits they have i voted

                    As a counter weight to all this nonsense, we have a noo organic shop opened in the town - they are happy that if you buy £2 worth of veg, you can help youself to a big bag of ugly/end of line veg which you can do soups & stuff with.

                          Most of my root veg are thoroughly smacked with the ugly stick as soon as they germinate. Does this casserole dish look bovvered?

                            This 'ugly veg' thing makes me seeth - why give a damn what it looks like as long as it tastes good. No wonder some people are losing touch with real life, when we're not allowed to see anything but 'perfect' fruit and veg in the shops. Often the smaller more oddly shaped stuff tastes better anyway. I'm off to vote now....
