  • The Saga of the Drowned phone

A couple of days ago I went to the lottie to work for several hours, and took milk with me for a cuppa (or two). When I realised the time I chucked everything into my bag, including my watch, phone and the milk , rushing home to start dinner before son no2 got in from work (I know, I'm a big softie but I know what it's like getting home after working all day, to find no food started).
OH came through to the kitchen to tell me the miilk had leaked over my watch and phone, but he'd wiped them off and they seemed fine. Later on I went to use said phone, and as I picked it up a dribble of milk came out of the back. Milk was inside not only the battery area, but also running out of the speakers, volume control etc. Needless to say, one dead phone. When it dried out the milk residue could be seen clogging everything. Watch is waterproof, so thankfully, that was fine.

Yesterday we went to get another phone, (I have a sim only contract which suits me at £10 per month). I liked my HTC Wildfire S, so decided I'd go for that again, but found the Desire C half price, £30 cheaper. It looked a good enough spec for me, particularly the bit that said 4gb integral storage. I had a 2gb sd card in my wildfire, which had been OK, but the integral storage was too small, I had to keep deleting apps I used if I wanted a new one. Once the new phone was charged and I started setting it up, I realised it didn't come with it's own sd card (the wildfire had), but hey, my old one still worked, so never mind.

I was puzzled as to why once I started putting my Kindle, Audible and other apps on I only had 0.8 gb left. Turns out, yes, it does have 4 gb storage, but the OS and pre-installed apps take up 3 gb. Maybe a tad misleading in the reviews and other literature out there. I know a pc comes the same, the OS and pre-installed stuff takes up space, but you can usually delete bits, and in any case, it isn't three quarters of the whole storage!

Son no1 started to tell me how to root the phone, delete the ROm, install a smaller copy, delete stuff to make more space etc. Not with a brand new phone, I'm not. He did tell me how to back up everything, which would have been useful advice before I drowned the other one, but when he said he'd 'bricked' his 8 times, I decided I will live with what I have. I can't stand any more stress!

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Can you take it back and change it for another one?

Thank you - you've made me feel so glad I can't afford another phone yet - financially or stressily!
