  • Running Day Courses

    Hi,

Just thought I'd ask on here as people seem to know a thing or two

I am looking to run some day courses this year on the farm on a few subjects including keeping chickens, woodturning and making biodiesel at home, as individual courses.

I was just wondering what you'd expect from a day course apart from all the info being there. It'd probably cost about £60 - £80 per person, including lunch and tea & treats throughout the day. Groups would be no bigger than 8.

Also, does anyone know where we'd stand with regards to insurance and h&s

    Cheers!

I'd have thought public liability would be required, not sure about H&S. Day courses of that sort around me (within an hr of travelling - i.e. bristol) are around £40 - and for that lunch/drinks are provided. Rough hours are from 09:00/10:00 - 13:00/14:00..

I'd also want to know what level you were targeting, as an intermediate chicken keeper say, who's interested in breeding might not want to hear the basics of chicken keeping?

I think a hands on approach would be wise, most courses I've been on have been hands on - and the ones that haven't I didn't enjoy.

Perhaps hand outs with the key points would be a useful resource for folks to take away if wanted too.

Other than that, erm... not sure

They would all be beginner courses really. The chicken course would be ok at about £40. Biodiesel and woodturning would have to be at least £60 as there is the cost of materials.

Courses would be very much hands on. It is the best way to learn in my opinion

If its any help, the River Cottage day courses are MUCH more expensive than that (just paying for the name, I think) and they dont seem to be as hands-on as yours is. I think theirs start at £160ish!

You would want to be sure that your students were in a safe environment though...start with a Risk Assessment?

Well short of having a chicken peck them or poo on their shoulder, there won't be any danger.

M2R guess that would cover the safety aspect perhaps , but there is also the health bit.....
great idea though, wish I lived closer I would love to take any of those courses!

Don't mean to be negative Matt, but doesn't wood turning involve sharp objects and things rotating at speed?

Hi Mathew, I have to applaud you on thinking about runnning courses. Unfortunately these days nothing is straight forward ans usually everything involves H&S.
Firstly your price for a course should be based on overheads plus a percentage profit. People expect value for money, a £40 course with a sandwich and mug of tea would not be perceived as value for money as opposed to a £50 with several tea and bikky breaks and a quality lunch. If materials need to be include its a good idea to tell people what they will be going home with
By stating there is no danger just shows how much you have got to learn. There is danger all around us and until you find out about risk assessment you don't realise. Good example is a straight forward cup of tea. How will it be served? How hot will the water be? Will there be a safe place to put a hot cup of tea down on? and there are even more questions. I am not trying to be a killjoy just trying to be helpful, and if I can be of more help then let me know.

I have setup and run businesses before, that isn't a problem. I know how all of that works It will be very good value for money. I recently went on a course and it was utter pants. It cost over £150 and that is what got me thinking

I have a few tea urns from a catering trailer I sold. We use an outside catering company for various dos we have who provide local organic food.

Yes I was joking. Spoken to a few h&s advisors this morning and I'm meeting one on Saturday. I have a feeling though he will just say get insurance and do the risk assessments as the farm is a working business and has various safety precautions in place already.

So what qualifications do you have to teach such courses to ensure your's isn't as pants as the £150+?
