BBC News - British GM crop scientists win $10m grant from Gates

    *sigh*

I'm sure I'm being simplistic here but if crops in the "poorest parts of the world" need nitrogen, what's wrong with urine? The poorer parts of the world are unlikely to have a sophisticated sewerage system so why not tap into this instead going down the GM route?

Doubt it,Bill Gates is nobodies fool,he would not be sponsoring research that would directly profit a seed company,he will have this stitched up tighter than a drum.

I doubt that very much. I do however believe that the guy's heart is in the right place and that the initial research is almost certainly AIMED in the right place but I'm also 100% sure that it will end up being totally developed for profit rather than the original ethical aim of helping poorer parts of the world. There are too many greedy people in this world and big business is judged entirely on profit.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

One of the reasons Bill Gates will have this locked down is your very point .... "There are too many greedy people in this world and big business is judged entirely on profit" ...... HE is one of the worlds biggest business success stories,he knows how to ensure the outcome of work done under his instruction complies with his plan.

Yes but his part of the project is only the start, if it's successful then other people will get involved and the likes of Mr Gates will no longer have control so it doesn't really matter how tightly he thinks he has it locked down at present.

Before scientists got involved in creating GM crops to "solve food problems" the farmers, especially in poorer locations, used what are called "landrace" varieties.

Landrace varieties produce crops which are not regular or uniform in size or shape - this means that in a "bad" season (dry, wet, disease etc) at least one of the types of crop from the landrace seed should survive and produce food.

If 3rd world farmers went back to landrace varieties, and peed on their crops (thanks VC!) then they may have far fewer problems, as the crops wouldn't need additional water, chemicals etc etc etc.

It may produce less food each crop, but perhaps we should be surviving on what the earth (as in Gaia) can support?

                    Just a thought......

Crikey, you'd need a lot of pee to water a crop. How much can you?.............

I thought he was the kind of bloke that had made so much money, that he now looked at ways he could make a difference? Give something back?
