  • Rewarding Week That I've had.

I have been working on "Eco Week" with Newport Council.

The council invited local primary & junior schools to come to Tredegar House Nursery and learn about ecology, recycling, where water comes from; about bees; bushcraft and wood turning and whittling. There was also a local owl sanctuary and the children could hold and stroke the owls. (I nearly came home with an owl ). There was also a wildlife show where they had snakes, spiders and reptiles. Lots of shrieks from children.
Not suprised with an albino python 9 foot long and weighing 6 stone.

We had a mini allotment with lots of growing veg. We had celeriac, beetroot, runner beans green and purple, squash, pumpkins, kale, cabbages, lettuce and the very popular carrots and strawberries.

I dont think I have ever seen children eat so many raw carrots and runner beans, it was like they couldnt get enough. Mind you we did say that the veg would give them super powers.

I was helping the children to plant dwarf daffodils into 3" pots, they liked playing in the compost but if I never see another daffodil bulb it will be too soon.

All the children were great. Some had physical and some mental disabilities but they all left with a smile on their face.

I now ache in places I never knew I had and have slept better this week than I have in a long time.

Ive met approx 1200 children over 4 days and lots of teachers and helpers.

It has been a very rewarding week

Wish I could double-like that post Steve. Once for you and once for Newport Council for doing it
I know what you mean about the owls! I could watch them for ever, trying to decide which one I like best. The last one that I held was the great big one, Eagle owl?
Glad you had such a good week - work should always be like that

I did say they may be flowering for St Davids day or Mothers day and then they wouldn't have to pay for a present

You're good with the young'uns on here - you're a natural. Is this the job that you wanted, or is this volunteering? I've been out of the loop for a while. If it is, then congratulations

That sounds brill, Steve. I am glad you enjoyed it and even if you made just one child understand about where things come from, or the miracle of growing, then it was worth it!!

                          Well done you!

Sounds like a great week! Lovely too to see the council and you making kids enjoy nature and things growing.
As for pics...........you're not allowed to take pics of other people's kids over here. As a parent you have to sign a piece of paper before they go to anything so they can take a pic of any group for the local paper even.
