Friend of mine came over to watch the Grand Prix this afternoon. As he's a fan of spicy food I said afterwards "fancy trying one of the worlds hottest chillies?". I plucked my first red Naga Morich off the plant I've grown and very carefully cut a thin slice and then cut that into 4. With big glasses of milk at the ready we both used cocktail sticks to pick up one piece and put them in our mouths. For the first couple of seconds it just tasted like a nice sweet red pepper, then it exploded. Between us we consumed 2 pints of milk in the next 10 minutes trying to put out the fires. It wasn't painful, but it was close and we were both sweating profusely.

So be warned, these little b*gg*rs are as hot as they say they are.

You just reminded me of a visit to a spice plantation in India. The guide had had enough (as had everybody else) of the big headed know it all telling anyone that he could eat any chilli raw. Off the guide went and came back with the smallest chilli I have ever seen. Needless to say after that we did not hear anything other than wimpers from the know it all as he turned redder and redder - much to the delight of the locals!! Still makes me giggle now - oh to understimate the power of the humble chilli.....

    Have you recovered yet?

Fully recovered, TBH I was just worried that I'd built it up too much and then it was going to be tame.

Only thing is now I'm not sure what to do with the rest of them. I only grew it out of curiosity, an unashamed guy thing

Sounds like an exact replica of a scene at my house...! Grand prix, ale, chillis, and 2 daft blokes At least I get the vague amusement of watching them stumbling around, eyes watering, dribbling, trying to get the yoghurt out of the fridge - was nearly as good as the cricket

I'm just glad I err'd on the side of caution. Neither of us came into direct contact with the Chilli before putting it in our mouths and the milk was at the ready before we started.

Fiona, if you really want some I'm sure I'll have some self-saved seeds later in the year so just PM me.

I'm not sure what variety of chilli my OH and his friend were sampling, it was one that the friend had grown. It was small, thin, and red, and I don't think they expected it to be quite so hot

Sarz, don't know what that was but it doesn't sound like a Naga. Nagas are puffy like Scotch Bonnets and are recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as being the hottest Chilli in the world.

                          Yer, I know..
These looked more like a small Bird's Eye, but judging from their reactions, they were a bit hotter

Birdseyes are very hot but just about bearable if you don't mind anaesthetising your face for an hour or so. Nagas are much hotter and IMHO hazardous in that they can dissable the unwary consumer much as mace or cs gas can.

My African Grey likes to eat chillies ... the trouble is that she likes to kiss your face, your eyes and your nostrils afterwards
