I don't rent- but if I was the landlord and you'd been keeping the garden in good nick ( and so removing the need to hire a gardener) then I'd think it was my responsibility to repair/replace it.
Out of interest....are we talking about an electric mower? Cos as I understand it ( my kids rented as students) that landlords MUST service ALL electrical goods they provide for you EVERY year- and have them certificated as safe to use.

Thinking back to when we rented, although we didnt have a garden and mower as such, I'd contact landlord and let him know, as its his property. What does your tennancy agreement say?

If it was me, I'd be happy that the landlord had provided a mower for so long, and go buy a new one (with the understanding that it's your property and will go with you if you move). I would tell the landlord that his old one has packed up though, out of courtesy and to protect your bond.
We've rented for years and never had gardening equipment provided

check your tenancy agreement.....the way that i see it, if it was there when you moved in, then it is the landlords responsibility.....i dont rent so dont know

As Allotmentlady says you need to check your tenancy agreement and also check if its on your inventory of goods and get it removed if yes.

As someone who has rented property out in the past I would say its the landlords responsibility but like the others have said you need to check your agreement.

My Mum was "given" a faulty cooker and a faulty lawnmower when she rented her house. She now feels obliged to replace them, whereas I said she should've stored them in the shed and used her own decent ones.

If it isn't on the inventory (or you don't have an inventory) then it doesn't exist (so leave it in the shed when you move out)

We don't have an inventory list, the property was advertised as unfurnished, and that was it really. Obviously the white goods where there, but nothing else apart from a broken strimmer that was also in the garage.
I think I'll mention it next time we see him, and buy one in the mean time. I have left the strimmer in the garage even though its useless, I guess there'll be another piece of junk taking up precious space!

Problem solved!
I found a new one (well old really) on freecycle, so I have done a swap!
I have even have someone to take the old one, knowing its needs fixing of course!
I just LOVE freecycle!
