Oh Two Sheds where were you? we had two Waxwings visit us today and they frequented the trees at the Linear Park end of our site. I did get some photos and they stayed all afternoon.

Oooh - I've only seen waxwings once, when I used to live in Cambridge. A whole flock of them on a Sorbus of some kind was an amazing sight.

Thanks for the pic Benacre. I usually have a passing party at some time over the winter, and they stick around a few days. This year I only saw them once for a few minutes.

I dont think that Scotland has that many this year, The mild spell may have kept them in Scandinavia.

We've not had many easterlie winds this winter so Waxwings have been few and far,the recent winds could have blown a couple over(same with the Cod fishing,better now we've had a good blow).

One of the things I miss about the mainland is the larger variety of birdlife - I haven't seen anything like waxwings or even a fieldfare or long tailed tits since moving over here.

Cool pics Benacre. Waxwings have definitely been in short supply this year, the mild weather means they don't have to escape scandinavia and come looking for extra food. A couple of year ago there were major irruptions of waxwings, with flocks as large as 600 in Aberdeenshire. You're lucky living on the east coast there, it's the business for birdwatching as I'm sure you know well already! We have siskins on our peanut feeders recently, nice to see them so close to the window.

I think it must depend where you are Srodders. I have a great variety of birds - long tailed tits in gangs, waxwings at times, and today I heard the field fares, but couldn't spot them. The winter weather has been so mild that waxwings and fieldfares have been short but we do have all the common garden birds and resident Siskins, Greenfinches, Goldfinches, Bullfinches, Coal Tits, Tree Creepers, and a Heron. The list is too long to mention. Maybe in Guernsey you just have different kinds of birds. When we were on holiday in Madeira there were gangs of birds going about like flocks of Sparrows. It took us a while to work out they were Canaries. !

i think waxwings are probably one of the prettiest wild birds, i haven't seen one for about 30 years when we had a large invasion of these birds in hartlepool, probably due to a harsh winter in Scandinavia.

Only seen waxwings once - when I was a kid in Glasgow, we had four sat on the rowan tree at the bottom of the garden - think I spent hours watching them - thought they were beautiful then, still think they are beautiful now.
