  • Radish -'French Breakfast'

    Does anyone know why this Radish has this name? Is this something the French do regularly that I don't know about...? Intriguing!

    No idea- but the locals we've met so far dip their radish in salt when eating it as 'nibbles' with their crisps and drinkies before their meal!
    Never seen that before!
    I wonder if they are a less spicy variety????

        They are less spicy - in the Midlands (where I was brought up) we used to dip radishes in salt as a nibble.

          I love radishes-they give the best burps with a bit of fizzy:P

          I never thought about the name.What about onion Bedfordshire Champion?Is it a champion in Bedfordshire?

          Can you think about the other veg names?

            French Breakfast radishes are called that because traditionally, being less peppery, people going to work (and usually provided in a resto or bar with a kir, which started life as fruit syrup added to white wine so you could tell the boss that you'd had a fruit drink) could eat them.

            In general we can get many more types of radish that you can get in the UK, all sorts of different strengths.

            Down here in 24 you often get them as a starter with fixed price meals, eaten with butter and sometimes bread.

              I've never been offered a radish here ever, either as a nibble or a starter - however ate the first of this years radishes from the garden for lunch today in a salad....not certain what variety - the long ones...................

                Hmmm- yup- I'd forgotten- they are also dipped in butter here too ( clearly in the warmer weather when the butter is soft!)

                  There were a bowl of them on the counter in the village bar yesterday when I popped in to post some letters (and maybe partake in a swift one or two). First time I've ever seen them there, but have often had them as a starter or as nibbles when having a plat de jour.
                  Not sure about having them for breakfast though?

                      Mmm,radishes on bread and butter.Mine not ready to eat yet!!!Has anyone grown'hilds roter neckrruhm'(no theres a mouthfull!) they advertised in DTBrown catalogue and was thinking of sending for some.

                            ;This is how they serve radishes in Bavarian beergardens. It's a large, mild white radish that is cut into a spiral. Just to add more international radish to the mix.
