    Rabbit crisps anyone

    Just read this on the BBC news site:-

    BBC News - Survey reveals children's food knowledge worrying

    its about kids knowledge of were their food comes from, my favourite is thinking rabbits are the main ingredient of crisps

    I like the idea of butterfly cheese

    Although, on a serious note, it's quite worrying really that kids don't know these things!

        Funny, but I don't think it's a concern. They use the so-called 'weasel words' like "some" and "others" without specifying how many. In a survey of 1,000 6-8 year olds, if 1 of them said cheese came from butterflies I'd say that was a pretty succesful education for the 999 who didn't. I find it unlikely that the humourous answers applied to any more than one child at a time.

        Besides, it's children's charming way of filling in the blanks in their knowledge with their imagination that makes them so delightfully appealing.

          Ash was asked fairly recently where eggs come from...'cows' says he!...I got several disapproving looks.

          We have chooks and he often collects the eggs so I think he knows really!

            well I can remember in the late 70's early 80's the shop selling hedgehog flavoured crisps and I doubt there was any real hedge hog in them

              Oh - you just beat me to it! I used to love those hedgehog crisps, so did my kids (I only bought the crisps for them, you understand) Can't remember who used to make them or where they came from.

                I think you summed that up perfectly
                coming from Somerset I know most of the kids around here are taught at nursery where food comes from they even have fruit tasting at our nursery, luckily I turned up during one of the sessions and tasted lots of fruit with them (I wonder where they thought the dragon fruit came from, admittedly after tasting it I wished they hadn't bothered getting it in the first place)

                Kids like to say things for fun my kids once told a health worker we feed them chocolate sticks and dips when they actually had carot sticks and dip, thank god the health vistor had a sence of humour

                  I've a feeling the hedgehog crisps were so called because the flavourings were pork (hog) and herbs (hedge). Good name though - we've all remembered it!

                    My nephew spends a lot of time with grown-ups and because they know so much compared to him he tries to emulate them by telling people things. Of course, most of what he knows we adults know even more about and he finds the only way he can impress us is to make things up, that way he's got a chance of telling us something we don't know.
                    I wouldn't be suprised if one day he just came out with a fact that "Crisps are made out of rabbits" or "Cheese comes from butterflies". If I didn't know better and someone pressed me for an answer I can imagine either of those making sense.

                        Mr in Pots once told our kids that those huge straw bales wrapped in black plastic were cow eggs.
