Every year our village pub holds a potato growing competition. (The Reindeer Edingley Digging Society). Each person taking part purchases one seed potato (all proceeds to charity). This is then planted and looked after until time for harvesting. That time is now.
From just one seed potato I have just collected 89 potatoes with a combined wieght of 15 kilos and 428 grammes. The biggest single potato wieghs 470 grammes.
Yield and total wieght are up this year but biggest potato is more than 100 grammes lighter than last years.
I had planted into an old slatted wood compost bin to which, as I earthed up the plant, I added extra wooden slats. I have watered well but was worried that I might over water. As it turns out when I harvested the growing medium was a little dry. Perhaps more water would have bulked the spuds up a little more.
The potatoes will be taken to the pub later this evening (that's my excuse anyway) and we return on Sunday evening to find out how well everyones done.
Wish me luck.
