I sit on a cowch yet pull up cooch?

I never know the correct way of pronouncing cumin...is it kewmin or come in?

p.s.I say kewmin,but am often corrected!

grass - glass - bath

none of which have an r in them (oh except grass but you know what I mean)

cooch - is also cwtch which is Welsh for cuddle, and no way am I pulling up cuddle grass - so cowch it is for me. The thing you sit on.

And yes, kewmin here too.

People always mock the way I talk, I love it. It reminds me of how diverse we all are.
A while ago I met a girl from Edinburgh on a night out, she had a friend from Leeds who'd met a guy from East Hull. The four of us stood in the taxi queue mocking each others' accents for about an hour!

I used to laugh at the way my ex said "bow", she being from Hull pronounced it "Berr"! When she mimicked the way I said it she said "beew"!

I bet she's disappointed when there's nerr snerr in winter too.

Being a suvverner married to a nawverner, it used to be commented on that there's no "r" in bath, glass, class etc etc.

There's also no "r" in tomato either.

Glyphosate is SO often called glysophate. Even John Cushny used to do it - till someone must have tipped him off.

Ah yes, in my past life as interior designer, we would often discuss if voile is pronounced voyal or vwoile. I always opt for vwoile coz it sounds posher (you can charge an extra �10 a metre for vwoile rather than voyal!!) and also, its like how you pronounce voila in french - so there!

I have a friend who was told by a posh flower arranger that the Mexican orange blossom plant, Choysia (which we call choy to rhyme with boy, sia) should be pronounced Shwazia! There has been some p*ss taking since then I can tell you!

I say ClemAYtis, do you say CLEMatis?

I'm a 'non-posh' northerner so most of my pronunciations have a 'hard' 'a' sound in them rather than the longer, softer 'ar' sound(bath, not barth). As for how you pronounce plant names I've had whole converstions with people where I've pronounced it one way & the other person has pronounced it another especially clematis (me), clemaytis (other person), as long as you know what you're referring to I don't think it matters.

That's a good one. Normally when people tell me there's no "R" in glass I'll point out there's no "I" in garage (garidge)!
