  • printer communication problem

I need advice from someone techy please.

My printer and computer are no longer on speaking terms. I have done nothing, but I think the driver updates automatically. I've tried reinstalling the usb controller, the printer port, and finally I've uninstalled the printer to reinstall it, but the install navigation tells me the product has not been recognized during driver installation.

I've checked all cables, everything's connected and supposedly working. Help!

Only a suggestion but did you completely uninstall before reinstalling?

My only solution is System Restore. If I have a problem, if no-one else can help and if I can find them, I hire the A team I'm sure someone will come along with a less drastic solution MH HotStuff, Chris or BB are usually very helpful with this kind of thing.

Have you tried a different USB port?

Check your documentation Mothhawk, some printers require the software installed Before connecting the USB lead, others require the USB lead connecting first.

Often windows updates install generic drivers and as a consequence will not talk to the usb port. Must printers default to a system port that the printer can not negotiate with. BB is correct most usb drivers need to be installed before you connect the printer.

Diconnect the printer, uninstall the printer drivers and then use the disk provided with the printer, then connect your printer

The disk insisted I connect the printer before installing the driver. The blasted thing has been working fine for the past 4 years, then over the past 3 weeks it has gradually been more and more reluctant to talk to the computer. I'm still on windows xp. Could it be that the driver has updated to one that is no longer compatible? Do I need to upgrade to windows 7 or 8, or just buy a new printer?

if I have to upgrade, I'll need an external hard drive to transfer my stuff. Any good recommendations?

So firstly, Deffo USB not wifi you're connecting to?

If HP printer, on their web page in small letters under software download is drivers only download.

If USB use a different port

Go to control panel, click printers. Right click on the Epson and see what port it is trying to use. Failing that maybe an upgrade. Kingston external drives are ok

Another option might be to start it in "safe mode" & chose start with "last known good configuration"
