Portable Mobility Scooter Recommendations

I use a TGA vita s around the estate, very nice machine, handles mud and snow well, not a fold up machine though, TGA do make car boot machines though, no hesitation in recommending any thing they make, very well made but they can be a bit pricey.

a couple of months ago I deteriorated to the point I had to buy a car boot job for myself. I bought from lloyds pharmacy, just their standard machine, excellent value for money, works well, not the smallest though, fits in the car boot but pretty much fills it, quick and easy to assemble and dismantle.

if you go for the lloyds machine don't order online, phone their dedicated mobility line, 033 130 2620, they often run specials you won't see online. when I bought mine the were discounting red ones, saved me a £100 against their web site price,

if you dont mind used machines I have found mobilitygiant.co.uk to offer fair prices and good reliable service but the lloyds machine is hard to beat for a trip to the shops or a day out on paved surfaces

does your wife have a 'less portable' scooter that she uses at/from home?

If so, you can buy automated and semi-automated hoists which can be fitted to your car boot to enable you to get a heavier scooter into the boot of your car safely, without doing your back in.

Lottie Dolly - Good idea re asking people on them, thing is I don't get out that much where I see people on the Portable ones that's why I was asking here re recommendation and don't touch with a barge pole.

SelkirkAlex - Thanks for the info re Lloyds Pharmacy info I have been looking at their web page as they appear to be reasonable priced, what is it like going up and down kerbs as it does not appear to have anti tipping wheels at the back like some I have seen. I'm looking at the Shoprider Corella Portable Mobility Scooter and the Style Plus 4mph Portable Mobility Scooter there is little difference in the price but the Style Plus appears to break down into more parts and you have a 2mile more Range. from the page Shoprider Corella Portable Mobility Scooter - Betterlife from LloydsPharmacy which is the model you bought?

I looked at mobilitygiant.co.uk but they don't appear much cheaper than buying new from what I could see

My wife seems to be at least listening to me and coming around to the idea, she does not want to give in and stop walking, but her range is reducing and then there are the days following where she in such a lot of pain and less mobile until she rests and builds her self up and recovers enough to potter around the house. She hates that I do all the shopping as she can not manage a full TESCO shop these days.

I have established that she would feel safer on a 4 wheel rather than a three wheel scooter so that helps point be in an initial direction.

Strangely Cad, I have a vision of yr Mrs on her scooter towing a rotavator attatchment up and down your allotment .

I bought the basic betterlife style model, like your wife I resisted for a long time preferring to use a trolley as support, but after a trip around a supermarket I would be in so much pain I would be wiped out for the day, not to mention other touristy type stuff being impossible, the lloyds machine really has made a big difference.

I haven.t found pavements to be a problem, you don't see it until you have to look but you would be amazed how common ramps and little lips are, it does have little stability wheels on the back, I would be more concerned about sideways tipping. but as with most things a doze of common sense goes a long way, it could be a nightmare in a cramped old village or parts of old York but should go anywhere in the modern world.

sounds like your wife is still mobile enough to stand and let you manhandle it over/past any obstacles you might encounter

gradients are more a factor of load weight, simple power to weight ratio, I am a big man, 6'4" and 130 kg the lloyds machine handles it fine, not sure how well it would handle steep hills but there aren't any alpine supermarkets

definitely 4 wheels above 3

Cad, most supermarkets have mobility scooters you can borrow to do your shopping. Could your wife use one of those for the Tesc0 shop?

I had thought about that but is throwing her straight into a shop environment with walking people who are not on the look out for a maniac on a mobility scooter the right environment to build up some confidence. I was actually thinking about taking her to monkey world and hiring one of theirs and letting her drive around the parks walkways at her own speed.

That's a good idea, Cad - sounds like a fun day out too It would give Mrs Cad chance to see what she likes/dislikes about their scooters to refine the choice a little.

Have you asked social services (or whatever they're calling themselves nowadays) If she has a recognised condition she may be able to get one free of charge. There's also VAT relief available on certain items which will make a considerable difference to the price of something like that.
