  • Poor little kitten

Having been ill all last week with that awful stomach bug & O.H. down with a cold (man flu) I was feeling depressed enough already but at the weekend I spent 2 days trying to catch a little feral kitten which I could hear crying somewhere in all the wind, rain & fireworks outside. I caught a few glimpses of it & pushed some food under the bushes where I thought it was & kept going out with a torch. On Sunday night dressed in parka, gardening gloves, wellies & with a torch I managed to find it under one of the neighbours' cars. I had to crawl SAS style up along the side of the car & grab the poor little thing. Got it indoors, dried it,put it in a box, got it to purr & fed it but it didn't look very well. Next morning I could see it had a weepy eye & was holding it's head on one side so I bathed it's eye,fed it & phoned the local animal sanctuary for advice & they said get it to them asap. They think it might have cat flu, luckily I'd kept our cat away from it, & they said they'd look after it. Now I'm really sad that it's probably had to be put down but O.H. says at least it had one warm comfortable night with us, I haven't phoned to see how it is as I think I know the answer. Anyway the moral of the story is please if you have a cat get it spayed or neutured & don't let anymore cats end up on the street like this poor mite. Here's a pic. I took.

don't lose hope hun, cats can survive cat flu, 3 of mine are living proof, and i have had two others that also had it and survived.

yes it can kill, but not always and even kittens can survive it, although they will be 'carriers' after.

Years ago a neighbour was feeding a stray cat but she wouldnt do anything about it as she had two cats, we also had two cats and couldnt have a third so eventually we caught it much to the neighbours annoyance and took it to blue cross, she kept saying they wont put it down will they, they checked it out and it had cat flue and cat aids and had to be put down. The neighbour went balistic saying things like omg I hope my cats havent caught anything and worse. She didnt like it when I said why didnt you take it in yourself earlier then you would have known sooner. She was willing to feed it etc but not give the poor thing a home.

the problem is, they will put down ferals that have it, it would be irresponsible to do otherwise and then release them back out.
however, we don't put down humans with HIV, so i don't think we should put down pets with good homes that have survived cat flu.you get them neutered and you take precautions like having your cats innoculated.
i am sure plenty of people can prove me wrong, but.......... i am stubborn like that.

I think if it has cat flu they will just put it down as it seemed to be feral. It was terrified of humans & hissed at me a couple of times but then it let me wipe it's eye & purred when I stroked it so I thought as it was so young maybe it would tame & make a nice pet. Hope it wasn't cat flu & that they do get the chance to rehome it.

Feral cats do survive cat flu as said before, and im sure was he/she was pumped full of antibiotics and being in the warmth he/she was feeling much better, and if the worse did happen your OHh is right, he/she had one night of warmth and comfort and some loving strokes and cuddles off you. heres hoping he/she has made it x
Life isnt about surviving the storm.....But learning to dance in the rain.

Back in 1980 we came across a kitten of about 5 weeks of age- and fully weaned. Vet said 4-5 wks old. Feral- covered with fleas and full blown cat flu.
Our own cat was kept well away and the vet vaccinated the kitten with the recently available 'dead' vaccine which could be used on cats with the flu.
Within 3 weeks she was in perfect health.
She lived for another 16 yrs.

With 100% attention from a human any kitten would learn to relax in hman company...hard work, but it's possible .

Let's hope the vet is giving her a second chance.....some refuse to put down a 'healthy ' animal.

Well done in rescuing her...it was clearly difficult for you

*which reminds me ........ i'd better get cleo off to the vets, cos otherwise i'll be tempted to let her have babies, and i'll then be known as the mad cat woman with 20 cats, that has a chicken house and no chickens and grows veg in her front garden ......... instead of just the latter lol

oh and cat flu isn't the death sentance it once was i'm sure the wee thing will be fine and soon find a lovely new home.

It's a beautiful little thing - I can't imagine for a minute they have PTS a kitten with cat flu. I know it sounds mad, but that little one doesn't look too bad - in terms of flu. I've seen them much much worse, and they've always come through it. As long as they get antibiotics, IV fluids and analgesics they tend to pull through.

You did a good thing - it wouldn't have had a chance on the street. Can't you call them and tell them you'd be interested in taking the kitten...that may encourage them to treat it. When I took on our youngest kitten it had cat flu, and lice...etc etc. I simply treated it with antibs and fluids...and after a coupld of weeks, he was a NIGHTMARE...chasing the others around the house, and shredding the carpet. I am happy to report he's still here, creating merry havok daily - but we wouldn't swap him for the world.

What a shame you're not closer...I would have taken the kitten off you...and this time next year you'd be getting pics of a chubby, cheeky cat!!

Well done you....so many people turn away when they see an injured cat/kitten. You tried your best!!

and if it was the CPL (do you have that in England?? lol) they most definitely wouldn't put it to sleep - they attempt to save everything, even when it's to the detriment of the animal!

Let us know if you find any more out about the little fella! (?)

Fingers crossed the little kitty was ok. It's not always cat flu with those symptoms. The little blighter might just have an ear infection, which would, unchecked spread to the eyes via the Eustacian tube. Or vice versa! Bless you for taking the trouble to find him and bring him indoors. xx

Well done to you SueA - whatever happens to the kitty now, it did know a little love and comfort. If it was me, i would have to know what happened to it I(thats how I got my ikkle black furball, she was a stray who had an airrifle pellet lodged in her throat) - but I can understand why you dont want to.
Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance

O.H. wouldn't let me have another cat, he knows how soft I am & how they take over your lives. The one we have now , Amy, ended up with us because she was abandoned twice by different neighbours & she wouldn't have tolerated a kitten anyway. I'm pretty sure the kitten had been out on it's own for a few nights, it's mum must have been frightened away by fireworks or something must have happened to her. The little one was crying for her so it's lungs were still in working order, I couldn't sleep on Saturday night because I knew it was out there on it's own & I hadn't been able to find it. It doesn't look too bad in the photo but it was holding it's head on one side & was very wobbly when it tried to stand up but it did wolf down some of Amy's Felix 'As good as it looks' so I thought that was a good sign. The animal sanctuary I took it to is just a local one next door to the vet's so at least it would get immediate attention, hope it was just a cold from being outdoors.
