I would suggest open it and give it a wipe. Sniff it and if it is okay, pop it in the freezer and take it out again on Friday (depending what cut it is). It should be fine that way.Happy Gardening,

It will provide entertainment for your guests when you & Mr. Sheds have a domestic and guarantee you an early night

I'd go with the wipe it/sniff it and freeze it too.
Also- I think it also depends on where he bought it....some shops like M&S and Waitrose have use-by dates way earlier than neccessary- other chains seem to be more accurate (ie going smelly on that date)
Interestingly I've noticed over here I don't seem to see the sell by/use by information so much- mostly the date it was packed- so you have to make the decision as to when not to buy it.....Interesting!
I'd certainly make sure it's well cooked though if you do decide to use it.And even if there are left overs-I'd bin those.( bit of a waste)
Personally- I'd freeze it for yourselves and buy fresh for your guests!

I am not a great fan of use by dates. Fair enough they give an indication of when things are safe to use but I think it is another case of people not using common sense, everything has to be "set out" clearly for people who have lost the old skills.
Pork gives some of it's own indications of when it's OK or not. Smell, has it got a slightly slimy feel, on the cut end, does it have a slightly "oily" sort of colouration?
If it smells OK, looks OK and feels OK, then I would use it.I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.Comment

I would go with Stacey Steve (or Hot Stuff<g>, or both!) With Pork it is usually pretty obvious if it is dodgy. If you can't smell it, let him cook it and if there IS anything wrong with it, it will become obvious when it is in the oven, however subtle the 'off' smell when raw, it is unmissable once things get warmed up in the oven.
PS, tinned spuds are VERY bad for the environment<g> (and if the tinned beans are the green sort, they are greatly inferior to proper ones).Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.Comment

I'm going to do Pork & Cabbage Stew
250g dried white beans (Cosse Violette do nicely)
2 large onions
2 cloves garlic
4 large spuds (Pink Fir Apple stay nice and firm in a stew)
1 crunchy cabbage, shredded (Rodima is what I've got)
all from the lotty, not from ruddy tins
300g pork slice
half a tin of chopped toms, salt & pepper. Pinch of paprika/chilli (optional)
