  • Plant related games

Inspired by a conversation on another thread, I thought I'd start a pacific thread on the subject.

As a kid we'd use various flora/fauna to amuse ourselves (who says you need PS3's and EggsBoxes).

    Here are some I can remember;

Using rose thorns to make yourself into a rhinoceros.
Snap the rose thorn off the stem, lick the flat bit and stick it on your nose - instant rhinoplasty.

    Grass darts.
Not sure what type of grass, but used to see it all the time as a kid. You take off the seed bit at the top and you could throw them like a dart - bonus scores if it sticks on your mates' clothing.

    Stickbud tag.
Again not sure of the plant, but it's that one that sticks to everything and has little 'balls' on it. Points for each sticky bud you get to stick from a handful.

    Weed catapult.
There's a theme here. Not sure what the plant/weed is called, but again, used to find it on the playing fields all the time. Looks like a little bull rush. You pick the stem with the 'bobble' on the end, wrap the stem over and run it up toward the bobble and the bobble would 'shoot' off.

    Grass whistles.
Good for what I now know as couch grass. Take a blade of grass and hold it between your thumbs (side by side) with the blade of grass flat between them. Then cup your hands and blow between your thumbs. It requires some practise, but you should get a high pitched 'whistle' or at least a duck like noise.

Jeanied reminded me of this one.
Rose hip itching powder. Find some rose hips, split them open and use the seeds/fluff as itching powder.

    Snapdragon hand puppets.
I think it's snapdragon anyway. You take the flower head and give it a slight squeeze and hey presto - a little flowery friend. Add the voice of your choice.

All I can think of at the moment. Add yours.

Miles and miles of daisy chains every summer. I used to make myself a 'crown' most days.

Buttercups - the 'do you like butter' underneath the chin test.

Picking the flowers off non-stingy nettles and pretending you were really tough by squeezing a stinger.

Believing you could (and trying) to squeeze honey out of of clover flowers

Endless attempts at 'Rose Petal Perfume.'

Try to sew rose petals together with grass to make dresses for the fairies...

Gosh loads more are coming to mind...

HW I think the plant used in your weed catapult was a plantain.
The stickbud tag sounds like cleavers or goose grass - some folk call it 'sticky willie'...

And we used to suck nectar from the base of the white dead nettle - nowadays I'm kinder and leave it for the bumble bees.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

So that one is one that you can strip the green leaf off the veins, Nicos - leaving the strings? How clever and imaginative!!

Dont know if this really counts but when my Dad once chopped back our Weeping Willow tree (must have been the first time in about 10 years judging by how much there was), it covered half the garden and we had a MASSIVE camp and endless warrens and tunnels for a week.

I too made lots of daisy chains. And spent hours, upon hours, looking for a 4-leaf clover!

Someone I know has one...cant remember who tho.

Oh I know what else we did as well. On our school playing fields when the grass had been cut and just left where it was it would turn almost in to soft hay. Then we used to do all sorts with it, like make tracks, or paths, or bury people in it like you do with sand at the beach. Or just throw it at each other and stuff. I looooooved the smell of it!
