  • Pills v Kittens

As I am getting bitten pretty badly at the moment and with no sign of mossies, I’m thinking the rotten little flea bags!

So, how to get flea stuff on/in/up them without the help of Daddy person? The flea stuff one squirts on their darling little necks says Do not let kitten/cat groom around area until dry (yes, in bold letters :O and remembers last time precious little Cleo washed it all off because it didn’t match her colour!) so Mummy person goes for a one-dose pill, hum (*thinks, still no Daddy person, this could be fun)

Cleo, firstly, gets put on table and I try with hands, Cleo not amused and says ‘stop stop’ – Mummy person stops cos she is clever. So then, Cleo gets her pill wrapped nicely into a piece of Wensleydale - yum yum says Cleo, thank you nice Mummy person for such a delicious treat. Daft blonde didn’t spot/notice it *taps nose

Cass, no way Jose is this tough broad gonna even get near the table with neck back and mouth open. So, into a nice piece of Wensleydale goes pill for tough broad, yum yum says Cass, then walks away from spec of Wensleydale saying ‘thanks, that was delicious’ – Mummy person goes to pick up spec of cheese, it is tough broad’s pill – in tact!!

We try again, having crushed the pill and rewrapped into cheese, same type, Cass looks at cheese, looks at Mummy person and walks off.

Hours later, Cass comes in, there is one pill left in this three dose pack.

Clever Mummy person makes like she used to with Charlie, tips Cass on her back and jams feet into table leg, mine not hers – Cass develops twenty back legs and thirty front paws, each with one hundred claws on. So, knowing how darling tough broad likes to hide in towels, we (me and Cass) get a towel and wrap her up, it is like a drug, tough broad turns to mush, in goes pill, out comes pill – ENOUGH says Mummy person and rewraps drugged kitten and throws pill into mouth.

Cass looks up at Mummy person all lovingly.

    Job done.

    Vodka for Mummy person please!

LOL, I can just picture it

TRex hates being held against his will for any kind of treatment too. He is allergic to the flea drops so we take him to the vet for an injection when he gets fleas (not often thankfully). Worming pills get crushed in his nosh and he is so greedy he scoffs the lot.

Are you being glared at a lot now?

Thanks for this post. Been having problems getting my 2 to take their worming tablets.
By the way if you put the drops on the back of their necks, just below the skull they can't reach it to wash it off

I had this battle with Whiskers a few days ago, trying to get the worming tablet down his neck... It wasn't fun! I have to do it monthly as well because he's always catching small rodents This time it took nearly 5 minutes, holding him by the scruff of the neck with his chin pushed up so he couldn't spit it out, dribble coming out of the corners of his mouth, utterly refusing to swallow it... When he finally swallowed it, and I let go, he stands up, all dignified like it had never happened and stalked out, tail straight up in the air and just twitching at the very tip.

When trying to give pets ( cats ) pills if you can hold their mouth shut ( not easy ) and stroke their neck gently they have to swallow.

                Do It 'Professionally'

                1. Kneel on floor with cat between your knees.
                2. Firmly grab the skin under their chin and open the mouth by pulling down.
                3. Push or drop the pill to the back of the throat.
                4. Release chin skin.
                5. Hold cat's mouth closed and NOT with head tipped back (the cat can't swallow properly like this and may choke)
                6. Stroke throat to encourage swallowing.

This is how the DD was taught to do it and it works. Try and stay calm too as this helps the cat to stay calm. Talk to the cat gently, even if you are swearing!

I used to get mine under the arm, hen put a finger and thumb each side of their jaw and press, when they would obligingly open up their mouths, put the pill in, let go of their jaw and hold them under the jaw, stroke, and swallow.
That was the easiest thing I found to do.
Bathing them however, when they turned up absolutely covered from head to toe and underneath, everywhere! in smelly mud [they must have fallen in the river] involved motorcyle helmet, leather jacket and gloves, a locked bathroom door, shut window and one other person to hold the towel...

Now just think if it was a dog... all you have to do is wrap the pill in bacon....

I had a friend who used to get her cat all relaxed then carefully drop it inside one of her Dad's Wellington Boots instead of wrapping in in a towel! She'd then clamp it under one arm, and literally push the tablet down the Cat's throat with one finger !

                        Worked every time!

Yes, the Cat would avoid her for a few days, but then forget about it and normality would resume.

The vet showed us how to do it and it works everytime. I have nto had a 'miss' now for 3 years with 3 cats being given pills every 3 months.
You have to hold them on a firm surface, like a table.
You have to put your hand on top of the vat's head, reach under the jaw with thumb and middle finger. Gently lift their head until poiting at 12 o'clock and the jaw automatically falls open. Then you can drop the pill down the back. They cannot fail to swallow but just to be on the safe side we drop a few drops of water from a syringe in too and then it all gets swallowed.

is that at the current 15% or Decembers 17.5% (assuming they don't put us straight up to 18% - nooo, surely not!)

And all that is assuming that the cat will let you lift it anywhere without shredding any flesh within reach... Or assuming that a) you can physically kneel down and b) 'persuade' the cat to be held between your knees...
Whiskers is a very big boy indeed, and the only way to keep him subdued is to have him by the scruff of the neck. Which means only one hand is spare for getting the tablet in...
Anyway, we managed didn't we Pisk? And our arms are still attached and mostly functional
