I like albums rather than puters, you cannot sit around a puter as a family and talk about pictures in the same way you can prints. Modern technology isn't all its cracked up to be.

I have set up a computer that is linked to the our flat panel TV screen. We can all sit round it and enjoy our photos. Most modern flat screens may have the ability to connect to a computer.

My 80 years old mother came to see us the day we came back from a particularly special one-off holiday and thought it wonderful she could see all the piccies on my Laptop, rather than having to wait for them to be developed!

But OTOH my wife moans that we never look at half the photos we take ...
... I'd like to get a digital photo-frame, but haven't seen one big enough + cheap enough

to tempt me yet

Because it's important to you.

Photos are a great comfort - my Ma spends a lot of her time with an old box of photos of her and her brothers and sisters, her children and grandchildren and of course, my Dad who died 7 years ago. Memories can't be torn up, burnt or erased though. You still have those.

Create a slide show of your photos, burn it onto a DVD - whack it in your DVD player - hey presto! Or you could leave your laptop on the sideboard with the slideshow running. No need to buy a photo frame.

The thing with albums though is it can contain so much more, snippets of material, a locket of hair, a thought at that moment, a card etc etc. These things don't translate onto disk or tv, The image maybe there but the things that help with the atmosphere etc aren't.

I love looking at old photos from my Gparents era when they were formal shots with notes on the back. If all we do is take a photo who is to say that in 100 years when we are being researched our future generations may not know who we are or what we did?

Keep a proper album its much more rewarding than a bit of burn't cd.

I agree to a certain extent - I prefer watching cinefilm to home video. My parents wedding is on cinefilm (transferred onto video) and there is much more atmosphere to it than the video of LadyWayne and my wedding.

However - if film/print isn't looked after properly it deteriorates anyway. We didn't always have photos - but we know what happened beforehand don't we? Otherwise family trees would be more like family saplings.

The problem with family trees is that there are more ways for people not to be found than to be traced, and at one point illegitimate children rarely had their fathers details, either because of embarassment or rape. It's very hard tracing family trees, whose to say it will be easier in the future. What if computers are just a phase?

I am another who prefers real photos. And we constantly have the toddler asking us to "read the photo book" as she loves looking at the albums, laughing at mammy when she was a girl, or pointing out everyone she knows in the more contemporary ones.

With the wealth of information stored about any one person on computers around the country/world I think family trees are likely to get easier to trace as the years go on.
