  • Phishing Scams

If I had an account with every bank that asks me to update my details etc I'm sure my finanaces would be in even more of a muddle than they are . Usually the junk mail filter picks up most stuff, I have a quick look at the list, and delete it. Deleting mail is usually my first job when I go on the computer, followed by checking up on what you lot have said.

This morning though there was one using a barrister's real name and chambers address. The only reason I realised was because it was from Portsmouth and I recognised it. I should probably have just deleted it, but instead I forwarded it (with explanation) to the chamber's address, so the chap knows his details are being used in vain. They'll probably wonder why I bothered, but it annoyed me that they had used a real person's name to lend authenticity. .

I had my first Phishing email this week supposedly from Barclays (NOT) I used to bank with them and I did forward the email onto Barclays. My hubby has these emails every week. Why anyone falls for them I do not know

We get serveral emails like that everyday. Plus others saying that we have won money in some weird lottery.

The bank ones are all scams. NO BANK will EVER ask you by email, post or any other means, to update or change or check your login details.
Also a good way to see if the email is a scam is to right click on any link that is in the email, then check it's properties. You will see straight away that the link doesn't go to where it's ment to go.

If, in our case, Barclays did send us an email like that (which they wouldn't) then the link they ask you to click on would go to www .barclays.co.uk/blah,blah,blah.....

As for winning money in some lottery....that just don't happen. YOU CAN NOT WIN ANY MONEY AT ALL UNLESS YOU HAVE ACTUALLY ENTERED THE LOTTERY YOURSELF.

And even if you did enter a lottery somewhere and won some money, the so called 'fees' that they ask for would come out of the winnings anyway.

It still surprizes me that people actually fall for these scams, and what with the UK ecconomy being totaly screwed up thanks to 'you know who', you can expect people to send you more scam emails over the comming months or even years.

        BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please, please, please DO report these things to whoever it is 'supposed' to come from! If everyone who isn't fooled by them reports, there is SOME chance of catching these crooks, there is also an address for 'any' bank scam of this type (will look it up, and if possible post it later).
The 'other' source of phishing is the Nigerian exile and his bank account. There is a very funny website set up by someone who claims to have put one over on these scammers to the extent of making them look total wallies. Can't remember the whole address, but it includes 419. (might be as simple as www.419.com)

Unfortunately people do fall for the scams though, It must be either sheer stupidity or pure greed.

Apparently I have several hundreds of millions in Nigerian bank accounts
            Several millions in Spanish lotteries
            64 bank accounts
and have won a time share

              I've lost track.
I'm not sure about the e-mail ones (first thought, "people should be clued up about online stuff, or stay offline" but that is perhaps an oversimplification), but the Nigerian scams also get sent out via ordinary post, and some of them may get to elderly people who have health reasons for being confused. These are all too often the victims of such crooks.

I get all those phishing e-mails too and send them on to the banks mentioned. What I don't understand is why these crooks haven't been tracked down. I just don't think anybody cares.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I'm not bothered about the pretend banks sending me emails, they go straight into my deleted emails folder. It's the ones asking if I would like my *rude bits* enhanced etc. or telling me that certain pills are a new low price. How on earth they get hold of my email address I haven't a clue, but I can guarantee I'd get at least 20 a day if my spam filter didn't block them. And anyway, with a name like Maureen, you'd think they'd know my gender wouldn't you? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm rant over.
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

I see the funny side to those. A friend of mine on a different forum has been known to post silly comments about having bought all the products on offer and now can't reach his computer because of the .... benefits....... He has a wicked sense of humour.......
