Could you print it off and scan it in using OCR software?

I gave that a thought Manda, but having used OCR before it sometimes requires a fair amount of proof-reading and amending.

I'm still searching through the dear old Google to see what's on offer - may be quicker to type the darn thing out fingers Mr MOM Jan 2008 can whizz it into something useable

No, it has me beaten I'm afraid. They've secured the data when they created it. I was hoping something in Acrobat might be able to help, but my version is very old and doesn't like the document at all. Sorry.

Here's some free 7-day trial software - can't find any info about if anything is disabled.

Thanks Manda, I too trialled that one - but sadly it will not actually let me do it - needs a password it says! I downloaded another one which will let me do a max of 3 pages

oooooh cheers Shirley

I know you can copy text from a PDF and paste it into a Word document (had to do it at work around a year ago in order to enter information onto a questionnaire), but I don't know if you can paste into excel. I wouldn't have thought so. Even with the pasting into Word I had to do some re-formatting. To paste into Word you open the PDF, select the content by highlighting and then use the "edit" "copy" options, open a new Word document and then use the "paste" option.

the problem with the document that I have to work with is that it is 'locked' so straight copying isn't an option - but thanks for trying RL

anyway - I'VE DONE IT found a way round it

It needs to go through a "mask". This was a major part of my job 17 - 20 years ago. The software is still part of Microsoft. I've had a little play but haven't had time to work out how I used to do it. I'd have a long fiddle with it Piskie if only for the intellectual excercise, but my son is in the middle of moving house and I'm a bit stretched at the mo.

Suggest, try importing through Excel. If you can convert to a Word document first it may be easier. If it takes longer than half a day give up and retype. It's only worth persevering with if you are going to need the skill again.
