  • Pallets and composts..you advice please!!!

We've managed to get our hands on 12 pallets- and intend to make 3 compost bins..all in a row.
What we've been discussing is which side of the pallet should be on the inside???

There are 2 sides to the pallet- one side has 3 bars- and the other side about 8...is it better for the more solid side to be on the inside- or the outside???..what do you think..and why????

I put the 8 bar bit (i.e. the 'smoother' bit) on the outside - it looks nicer.

Well we had thought that Hazel- and that the inside would be bigger- but were wondering about the rotting aspect and less airflow aspect.
( I fancy painting it sage green!!!)

Smooth side facing in otherwise makes it more difficult to turn as stuff gets caught in the nut and crannys

I'd put the 8 bars on the inside, it'll keep the heap together better that way - if you put the 3 bars on the inside, stuff will drop down the inside if the pallet? It might not look as nice though...

Put the 8 bars on the inside and Get some compost bags cut them open and staple to the inside of the bin with the black side facing out.

Spot on and when you have put some stuff on the heap put a close fitting lid on top with some weight on it helps keep the heat in....jacob

....as others, pop the smooth side inwards, then if you're worried how it looks grow some sweetpeas up it!

I've got some pallets waiting on the plot too, I was going to put them with the most slats inwards, but then appearances don't matter so much down there, as no-ones going to see them except the sheep! But I do think it'll make the heap easier to manage.

Classic Vine top tips those! I knew those bags I've saved would be useful, I'll do just that Nog, thanks - and then follow Jacobs advice too, one 5 star compost bin me thinks

I have found that it is best to cut up a milk bottle in to 2x2in squares and use them a patches. Put the plastic bag against the pallet then put the patch over and staple thru that. It reinforces the plastic stops it tearing.

Just occasionally, it's really annoying that my milk arrives in glass bottles on the doorstep every morning 'Spect cardboard will do the job for a little while, until it rots down with the heap...?
