  • Packed lunches

This is for those grapes that take packed lunches to work really, but anyone else who has ideas, all suggestions gratefully received.

I am finding that the sandwiches/packed lunches that I have all my life made for school and work are getting a bit dull and boring, same old same old.

I sometimes get a Subway - very yummy, lots of salad but quite pricey at around £2 so once a week at most
I sometimes go to Greggs (not sure if this is a northern only outlet, but it sells pasties, pies, sausage rolls, cakes, bread, etc for those of you who don't know of it) - nice but not too healthy, once a week at most

The other shops that sell sandwiches, Tesco and Sainsburys are convenient to the workplace, are all very much alike stocking the same types of food.

So, my question is, what are you taking for your packed lunches next week folks?

We have a microwave at work so I'm going to take homemade celery and stilton soup to re-heat and some crackers - rounded off with some apples and seedless grapes. Hopefully I'll lose weight on that lot!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I only work Saturdays so I like to take something nice I get lots of ideas from the Bento site :-

Yesterday I took pasta with pesto and sausage then a pita bread filled with salad. For the afternoon I had a piece of flapjack.

i work from home now but prior to that i always took a packed lunch & went through the same as you - it just gets a bit boring after a while. We did have a microwave though at my old place of work so i often took the night before's left overs: chilli, pasta, a pre-cooked jacket spud to be heated, etc. If you don't have access to a microwave at work you can try taking a flask of soup, cold pasta/couscous/rice salad, wraps with various fillings including leftovers. Hope this gives you some inspiration!

There is a microwave in the communal kitchen.
And I have on occasion, taken some of the previous evenings leftovers to reheat.
It just doesn't taste right somehow, and that's not because it is microwaved, as I use one at home sometimes too, and that turns out ok.
Thanks for the ideas, though guys, keep 'em coming.
          I need lots of inspiration

I'm trying to lose a few pounds, so I'm just eating 2 yoghurts & a piece of fruit a day for lunch.

When I eat 'proper' lunch I take a tupperware box of couscous & chickpea salad, or 3 bean salad, or feta salad, that kind of thing. I'm not a fan of bread, it bloats me.

Some days I take butties, some days a salad, or some bread to toast and eat with hummus / pate or in winter I take soup quite a bit. This works for me but may not for you as I don't like Subway or Greggs as I always find they taste a bit plastic to me, but then again I find this of most bought in butties so maybe I'm just faddy.

I agree with TS above. Also, I would keep a mix of dried fruits, muesli, tinned grapefruit is fab. If you have some of the above at work as a standby for when energy levels flag and a a bowl to eat them from it tastes like a yummy dessert when mixed with a nice yoghurt. Its filling and sweet.

As I don't work as such,my pack up is only for the lottie...usually consists of a flask of black coffee...I don't work too well if I've had a biggish lunch.
If I do a school trip I'll usually pack some sarnies & such, just to fit in...then struggle to function for the rest of the afternoon.

I can go for weeks eating just Honey Shreddies for lunch (dry, like crisps)
In winter, a tin of soup, beans or rice pudding, is a good emergency lunch, if you have a microwave at work (or homemade in a flask).

I just have sandwiches, but we make different breads to "liven" things up a bit. We're rock'n'roll like that.

I take whatever is left over from the night before, or cook something and divide it up into 3-4 containers. Today I have courgette and potato soup. I plan to make a curry tomorrow, so Wed-Thur I will have that for lunches. I have been known tto grab a load of stuff from the fridge and just make it up at the lunch table, including prosciutto ham, cheeses, tomatoes, salad...

Last week I had onion bahjis (should have been falafel, but Sainsbury's failed me!), with pitta bread and houmous. Yummy!

All you 'goody goodies', taking healthy stuff! Black Cherry conserve and crunchy peanut butter is a good mix (oh yes it is!). Philadelphia soft cheese and lime marmalade. Bacon and brie. My all time favourite - fish finger and salad cream - yummy. Kid's stuff, maybe, but at 60 I don't care!

The bacon and brie sound good but I'd pass on the rest of your combinations

Probably the best thing about living in Plymuff was an Ivor Dewdneys at lunch time. Just gorgeous.
When I was the Butter Meister, I had to take a packed lunch, and it was generally the same, but thats cos I loved it.
Chuffing great big baguette, with loads of ham and mustard with some home grown toms and pickled onions/gherkins. Oh, and loads of proper Bridel salted butter on it. Scrumpsh.
