  • Open or closed? Curtains that is

Following on from my garden security thread, I just had a thought. How many of you always shut your curtains at night? Or do you leave them open? We live in a bungalow, so always shut our curtains as soon as it gets dark. However in summer I tend to leave it as late as poss.
In the past on holiday, I always like to sleep with the bedroom window open and the curtains open too - but only when I'm staying in the middle of the countryside and in an upstairs bedroom!
    How do you do yours?

We live in a terraced house with no garden at the front so we always close the curtains & try to keep the back entry gate closed, this is not always possible as it is "shared" with three other houses.
The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

I HATE the curtains being shut, I get claustrophobic My bedroom curtains are only ever shut for 5 minutes while I get changed. I sleep with them open, always. The living-room curtains stay open too as long as the OH is out, but he insists on closing them when he comes in, so I have to sit with my back to them, or go into the kitchen (we have no curtains to close in there )
I'm sure it is a source of heat loss having them open, but, I just can't help it

I live on a secluded little park home estate surrounded by woods and the only people we see round here are people who live on the site and visitors. I always leave my curtains (and windows) open all year round even though it is a bungalow. I draw the curtains to get undressed but then open them again before getting into bed because I like to see the moonlight in the room (at least I would if only I could stay awake long enough!)

We have wooden blinds. They are closed as it gets dark. One way for downstairs and the other way for upstairs. This is cos I've worked out that if they're shut the wrong way you can still see in and as we're on a main road (although set back a way) I don't want people on the no 13 bus seeing me in the bathreoom!

Open downstairs until we go to bed, then we close them. We have quite a big front garden and a 5 foot fence. I too would feel claustrophobic if they were closed. Upstairs are closed when we go to bed (there are three storey houses opposite so they would be able to see in), but I like to open them a little on Sunday mornings when I sit in bed with a cup of tea, especially if it's raining. Talking of three storey houses opposite - a couple of months ago a red light appeared on the fireplace as though someone was aiming a rifle through the window. Turned out it was a young lad across the road playing with a laser beam. We had him grounded - it frightened me silly! Still keep the curtains open though.

Closed as soon as it gets dark. Can't sleep with them open, even on holiday in a hot country!

Having been told by an experienced burglar that he always looked for houses where the curtains were open so he could see if what was there was worth stealing I close mine at dusk.

Now what were you doing, consorting with experienced burglars, Oldie??!

My curtains are closed in front (onto the street) and open at the back 'cos there is only the back garden and the next street's back gardens (two terraces) so there is no-one looking in!

Downstairs curtains closed as soon as it gets dark....

Bedroom curtains are closed in winter, open in summer - there is nothing at the back of us, so I don't care!

Closed when it goes dark - much more cosy and keeps the heat in.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We've still got single glazed windows so in winter we close the curtains as soon as it starts to get dark, even if its 3pm then in summer they're open nearly all the time apart from the bathroom ones in case someone can seem me when I've got the light on.

Our front room looks out on the road, which is a busy through route from one part of the town to another, so all and sundry walk/ride/drive past. Therefore we always close the curtains when it gets dark and we put the light on. However I dont like net curtains, so I suppose from a burglar point of view, they can see we dont have anything worth knicking at every other time of day!

Do burglars not work before dusk...............
