  • OH is getting frustrated.

My OH hates his job, the solution should be simple; look for something else, but unfortunately he doesn't see it that way. This time last year he was made redundant and would have done anything for a new one, then he was offered this one after Christmas and it was such a relief, so now he feels a certain amount of gratitude and loyalty - also he really likes his new boss - but it means he's stuck in a lab all day, whereas he's always been used to being out and about on different sites so now he's going a bit stir crazy and it's getting to the point where he really dreads Monday mornings. What do you think, should he stick it out?
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Why not look around to see what's available first?
Might not like what he sees and be glad of the one he's got....for now.

Life's too short to do what you don't enjoy all day- it'll affect home life too.
Though sometimes you need to compromise.

Can he ask if there is anything he can do which gets him out of the lab from time to time? If he likes his boss, then the feeling is likely to be mutual and they may be able to sort something out for him.

I hated my job for the last 3 years...really hated it...and it doesn't do you any good having Monday morning feeling all week and all weekend and in the night...

not having had a career for ten years now i can fully sympathise with him, i too would be soppily grateful to be given another chance.
thats said.... you cant stay where you're not happy and still give 100%

my advice is the same as Nicos' , look around, see whats out there, whilst it's better the devil you know, something he REALLY fancies may come up, and that is always worth taking a leap of faith for, life is too short to be miserable, especially with our working life as long as it is.

Noooooooooo!!!! He shouldn't just plod on. Nothing worse than doing something you hate. No-one should dread going to work on a Monday morning! He should look around for something else, and leave AS SOON AS HE CAN!!
I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!

If he can afford to lose his job, then by all means look round for something else.

In this climate though ... are there any other jobs going?

Perhaps he just needs some time to get used to his new routine. It's all too easy to feel the grass is greener on t'other side.
Mr Sheds frequently moans about his job, then I remind him that he only does a 4 day week, gets paid more in a week than most people earn in a month, and takes time off whenever he feels like it.

Jim spent years in a job he hated, wouldn't change because of pension, security etc. I made him look for another job and after a year of insecurity(his) doing agency work has found a job that he loves. Yes, he has to get up so early in the morning, but he doesn't mind!!
He is happy, I am happy, even the dogs are happy.

Why not look for another job, he's in work atm, that's the easiest time to look.

Don't stick with something he hates if it can be avoided.

On the other hand, once he's been there a year he has employment rights so they have to pay if he gets chewed by the credit crunch

I'd dearly like to leave mine for pastures new, but I've been there 9 years, and I'm 45, so I'm scared to leave some thing which would involve a big cheque to get rid of me for the sake of pastures unknown

But I'm not happy..... Does anyone really enjoy what they do for a living? (Cue ancient Wham track)

I used to have that very discussion "does anyone really enjoy what they do for a living?" with the last Mme Leponge. She used to positively adore her job in the UK and couldnt wait for Monday mornings, but I feel she was one of a lucky few. Most people accept they have to work to fund their lifestyle, pay bills etc, and some people hate their jobs.
I think if your OH hates Monday mornings so much, its time to go, but as has been said, try and get something else first. Times arent so easy currently work wise, so surely better to have something you hate but pays the bills, than to have nothing and not be able to.
                      Bob Leponge
