  • Oh deer Oh deer Oh deer

On the way back from Gatwick on Friday we were nearly home on a quiet stretch of road and we noticed a stationary car ahead. We could not overtake because there had been an incident. This car had struck a young deer (a common occurrence on this road). The driver of the car involved was totally stunned, shaken and needed hospital attention. The animal needed to be humanely put to sleep so we decided to take it the the nearest vet. The poor thing was loaded into our boot and we carried on. On checking on it's condition we found it had died.............what would you have done?

Contact the local hunt so it can be bled and gutted ASAP

    Then share it with them!

Hope you have a freezer big enough!!

I would have done what you did, Brengirl - specially if I had had my hubby with me. He was an animal lover too.

ETA - I wrote this before I found out that everyone else on the vine wanted to eat the meat!

Hope you weren't after compassion there BG!

I'd definately have done the same (if I'd had a boot large enough!). Was the driver okay?

I'd have taken it straight to my Dad to despatch and prep for the freezer. Just like my Sister did when she hit one!

Sorry if that offends anyone. Now't wrong with road-kill!

So sorry if I offend anyone but the poor young thing is now in my freezer. When we have roast haunch for dinner I will raise a glass or two cos I did feel very sad at it's demise.
As for the driver of the car involved we did not exchange details but I do know they were very distressed.

I'd have done the same Bren. My best friend lives in Verwood, and on numerous occasions when we have been visiting we have seen the deer by the side of the road, and on the road, living around the New Forest.

I'd make sure (since you removed it, even though you didn't hit it) that it's been reported.

Many animals that line our supermarket shelves have met more traumatic ends, I suspect.
