    Such a shame. Afterl the joy of the Chilean rescue it seems even more harsh. My thoughts are for their families, especially at this time of year.

          This is indeed a sad occasion.
          But thousands of coal miners are killed in China every year.
          This sort of event also happened regularly in our coal mines in the late 19th & early 20th centuries.
          In one such disaster in 1913 over 400 miners were killed. See below.
          Bearing that the link below only covers Wales on can only imagine how many miners were killed at work in the whole of the UK

            It must have been so frustrating for the people waiting when the rescuers couldn't even get in to try to find them. So sad.
