  • Now What?

    Right, here's the thing.
Went into the garden yesterday to find a collared dove (one of a pair that visit our garden regularly!) lying on it's back, though very much alive and with a suprised look on it's face.
Gently picked it up an found that it had been "got" by something - neighbours cat probably.
The damage didn't seem all that bad - a raw patch of bald on his back, and a some missing wing feathers. I think me going into the garden had scared the cat off before it could finish the job.
So I bathed the wound with salt water, administered some warm water via syringe - which he took quite readily - wrapped him in a small towel and put him to rest in the big pet carrier.
To be honest, I fully expected him to be dead this morning - shock and all that - but the little beggar has made it through and even flapped at me when I went to pick him up!
Have cleaned his raw patch again and given him some more drops of water with the syringe. He doesn't appear to have eaten any of the wild birdseed and crushed peanuts that I put in with him, but seems quite perky.
I've put a call out on FB for anyone local who has an aviary they could perhaps lodge him in until he recovers, as I don't think he's happy in the pet carrier.
Any suggestions? I know I may well lose him yet, but I'm not giving up without a fight. I'd really love to be able to get him recovered and back to his mate.

    RSPB?

Well done though - the friendship thread seems to be working it's magic [on the dove's mate, not on you!].

Well done you It was possibly hit mid-air by a falcon, I've seen a pigeon fall out of the sky before and it just sat there looking dazed for a minute, shook itself off and continued along its merry way.
I believe that the local vet would have a look at it and not charge you but I should check with them that I'm right before you visit.
Good luck to you and your new "bird"

You could put a little sugar or glucose in it's water for shock, or maybe the vet would give you some dioralyte solution. As long as it's drinking it should be ok, but you try mealworms - not many birds can resist them.

How does the wing flapping look? Is it flapping both wings equally?

Sorry guys, he went downhill during the course of the morning and I just gave him a little cuddle as he died.
I'm such a softie. I knew he would probably succumb to infection, but even so...
          He was so beautiful...

Sorry Creemteez. You did your best for the little fella and he died peacefully, not being harrassed by whatever brought him down initially. I've rescued quite a few birds over the years but they rarely survive the shock of an attack. You can only do your best for them - and you did.
