They probably don't know what the top object is, let alone linking the cassette with the pencil. Always got a pack of blank cassettes in my Christmas stocking, for taping the Top 40. I think there was a real skill in getting as much of the music track as possible and cutting off the DJ's rabbiting with the pause button. Then, in between cramming in a week's homework into two hours, remembering to take pause off for your favourite tracks.

About 10 years ago, we were given an old Sony music centre with a turntable. The BH and I dug out our LPs and the kids were astounded by them. Wonky 33rps in bright blue (ELO) or palest grey (Depeche Mode) going round and round and, if warped, up and down, with the worst sound quality we'd heard in ages!

That's why we loved John Peel even more than just giving us fantastic music - was he never spoke over the beginning or the end of the record. Well, on the odd occasion but very very rarely. I used to record sessions and sit there all evening waiting for those precious 4 tracks to start, with my finger poised over the 'pause' button.

                RIP JP. x.

Hands up all you Smash Hits fans!

I used to spend hours designing my poster display. My parents covered one whole bedroom wall in chocolate coloured cork tiles and posters were banned from everywhere else. I had photos, posters and record sleeves pinned to it, very artistically () as I wanted to be a window dresser when I left school.

                  Those were the days......!

Am I really that old that something from my childhood is nostalgia?

I guess this is a sign of the times:
