  • Nominations for seeds - please vote for a good cause

I am in the process of preparing 4 boxes of seeds from the Virtual Seed Parcel for donating to projects. Each box will have approximately 50 packs of seed in them.

Please post your nominations for projects that you would like the seeds to go to on this thread - this part will last until the end of Monday 27th Feb. This means people who access the Vine at home and at work should see this and be able to nominate projects. Put a line or two about the project in your nomination so that people can see what it's all about.

I will take all the nominations, post a poll which will last one week; and close the thread to any more nominations. The 4 biggest votes will all get their parcels sent on the week after.

P.s....Nominees must have a name and contact details for the project leader, and must not BE the person who will receive them ie you can't nominate yourself! It's the project leader that will receive the seeds, not the Grape, although the name of the Grape who nominated will be mentioned in dispatches.

I would like to nominate Vic Hobson who runs a group called Mudlarks in Hertford, if anyone is interested the link is Mudlarks.

Vic came and gave a talk to our gardening club and it was really inspiring the work she is doing there. she started by begging hertfordshire council for a few disused plots (allotments were not fashionable then and there were plenty of available plots) and started with a bare plot of land, the rest is history. Please visit the website and see what wonderful work she is doing there.

          Kx

p.s. I know she would be happy to accept the seeds as i was speaking to her about donating to them some of my spares and she would appreciate everything and anything

I would like to nominate the Triangle Community Garden - sadly I don't think it will gain enough votes because it is a local charity based in Hitchin.

I am meeting with the Chair on Thursday to discuss working (volunteer) with them and am pretty darn excited I can say

Anyway - here is the link to their website and I do have the contact name and details but not sure you want me to post it here.

Is there any more info I should give here?

                Mencap Gardens Pembrokeshire

After half an hour going through old Western telegraphs:-

                I would like to nominate
                Mencap Gardens
                Stackpole Estate
                Pembroke
                SA71 5DJ

In the gardens up to 40 students aged between 19 and 73 work towards their City and Guilds qualifications over a two to three year period. All the learning is taylored to the student's needs and ability. In addition to working in the main garden each student has their own 5' by 10' plot where they grow seasonal vegetables. Many of the students work there five days a week. Fresh produce is sold from the shop and visitors can also do pick your own. Flowers, plant etc are also available to purchase. The garden does get grants but they do depend on donations.

This is the web site but it's being rebuilt at the mo!
                'Mencap Gardens

I'll still post up anything I get from Mencap Cymru as well.

I would like to nominate Bucksburn Academy in Aberdeen. They have an ongoing project in our area with kids in the Community working with interested adults. They are midway through clearing and planting a wooded area that was previously a mess . The teacher in charge is restricted in what she can do because our local authority is skint and the funds available to her are very restricted. An injection of seeds would be a welcome help. I won't post the name of the teacher in charge but I do have contact details and I know she will be delighted to be able to open up another avenue for the children to learn how to grow their own plants for use in their project.

                  Edit note.

See extract from email received from teacher in charge.

Yes, the school does have a web site. bucksburnacademy.org.uk
We have a lot of articles about Sclattie there and links to the John Muir Awards.

I would like to nominate the Edible Space project in Chapletown Leeds. They are a community group who have taken over a patch of land (with the councils permission!) in the inner city and are growing fruit and veg alongside the locals. Its a group open to all, and a community group in every way. Chapletown is a deprived inner city area of Leeds but is rich in its diversity. Locals come together to build beds, lasagne plant, and sow and tend seedlings. The food is accessible to all and tasks such as watering are shared out. Its open to all ages etc etc. Great project!! I can get a web klink too if you want to have a gander!

I have contact details should you want them

Mindgrowers Allotment Project in Warwickshire would be very grateful to be considered for nomination for some seeds please. I have the contact details of the person in charge, and an address to send them to.

Here is a little about the project:

"Mindgrowers allotment project has been running for over 10 years now and is open to survivors and users of the mental health system and to those with experience of emotional distress. Members attend weekly sessions at one of the sites and take part in activities such as planting, cultivating, growing and nurturing, and do physical work for instance digging and construction.

We are totally organic which means we do not use pesticides or artificial fertilisers, in fact we take positive steps to encourage wildlife. All produce is divided amongst the group, according to who grew it, who needs it and who is involved when the crop is harvested. Members have reported benefits from the increased access to nature and 'growing things', building self-esteem and developing social skills as well as improving health and well-being. We encourage healthy eating by demonstrating how to prepare and cook the produce."

Thank you for considering this project for some seeds.

I'd like to nominate Hunloke Community Garden.

Hunloke is a community garden created on an old derelict field by the locals. It is now a fully operational nursery growing vegetables and plants for sale. The money made is then spent on the garden.

The Community Gardens is run by volunteers and it has become a haven for wildlife, birds, butterflies, hedgehogs, wildfowl and pond life.

An interview with a volunteer at the Hunloke Community Garden

PM me if you need there contact details.
