  • Nice problem to have - SOLVED

I have what i consider a nice problem , some of you will remember I was going to take on a rather overgrown plot as a winter project, but after digging a few test areas i decided against in the end. Now i have just been asked if i would like another plot as it is too big for most newbies.

The questions I am mulling over are:

Do I want plot 130' long by 20' wide?
    Do I really need it?
Could i make use of all that space?
    Will my existing plot suffer?

In the same order my initial thoughts are:
    Of course
    Probably not
Maybe if i use half of it for fruit and a PT and build some nursery beds
    Probably

    What would you do?

If you can dedicate the time & effort into it.........go for it.

I have plenty of time BM and happy to put the effort in. Little things keep popping into my mind.

      Lots of little 'what ifs'

Have a week to make my call

I think all your answers are spot on... I'd definitely go the fruit bushes and PT route, and maybe put in a few 'wild' areas, a nice place to sit, a shed or two....

Not that I've thought about this kind of problem at all. *whistling innocently*

A week to draw some plans & see what potential it has that your current one doesn't, i.e Polytunnel, Walk in Fruit Cage, Walk in Brassica Cage, Shed, Greenhouse...........the options are endless.

If we magically had extra space available, I'd plant loads of fruit trees and plants. Be great to have eating apples for summer, cooking apples for winter fruit pies and crumbles, cherries (so expensive to buy) plums, blackberries (my fave) and maybe even some figs. Yes that's definitely a nice problem if you have the time for it
LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.

PT is definitely on the cards. I have also been looking at constructing some decent coldframes. As you say BM the possibilities are endless........but

May I say, without being rude, it will sls depend on your sge and how energetic you feel.
Not much point in taking it on if its going to become too much for you.
Best of luck, whatever you decide.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

It's good to worry but you won't genuinely know until you give it a bash. You can always give it up if it does prove to much

If I was in your shoes, my main quandary would be the amount of work you have put into your current plot.

I'd take it (in all my first-time gardener enthusiasm and lack of expertise) and fill it with grape vines for wine.. someone by me has a whole plot dedicated to vines. They look amazing

Bramble for the record 62 and retired

Biggest concern BM is will pleasure become a chore. My current plot is very low maintenance but thats only through graft and keeping on top of it.

Unfortunately NG I am one of those people who wont give in, a weakness not a strength
