  • New putor

My old PC has gone belly up and I need to buy a new tower. At the moment I am having to use my work laptop bought in 2002 and is it slow on the net.

Now remember when it comes to putors I live in the dark ages.

First question my son tells me that with a new putor I just plug in and my internet and e-mail connections are automatic. I would love to know this is true as last time I swapped it took me days to sort it out.

Plus if you have any recommendations for a new tower I would be really interested to hear from you.

    thanks Colin

Providing you 'do' your emails on the 'Net, instead of downloading them to Outl**k/whatever, you should be fine.

Up until about three years ago, I was a 'desktop/tower' person. Then I borrowed a Laptop, when my Poota was poorly. Haven't looked back since. My old 'tower' is still perfectly useable (if you can be arrised to spend a week updating all the old Windoze updates - which I can't. Also I've now converted to Mac anyway, and there ain't no goin' back for me! ), but I'm now a complete Lappy convert. I can watch TV and surf/chat at the same time (she says, sitting at the desk in the spare room like Billy n mates! lol), or even catch up with TV progs on it whilst soaking in the bath. I even take it with me when we go Caravanning. They are sooooooooo much more portable, and user friendly.

As for recommendations, get the best/fastest you can afford.

The last couple of PC's we've bought have been from Ebuyer.com but check if it comes with an operating system because not all theirs do.

A good investment with any puter is an external drive, which reminds me time I re-saved my latest stuff....

Like G4, I wouldn't go back to a PC after having a laptop. Hated being trapped in one room although it was a good excuse for an escape sometimes! The laptop moves between houses, not just rooms.
This one seems to do all that the PC did (still have it actually) but doesn't need its own desk. In fact, I could get rid of it and gain a spare bedroom - why didn't I think of that before

Me neither. This one I'm using is a big old thing: I deliberately bought a "desktop replacement" because I wanted a touch-typist's keyboard and a big screen for my photos & videos.

Himself got a little one so he could take it to work, but he hates it, it's too small, and I can't type on it because the keys are too small and close together

Tuther way round with me! Had tower, then laptop, now back on tower with its own room!
OH has laptop and even though its quicker and you can sit with it on your knee, I still prefer sitting at a purpose made desktop pooter.

Why do you distrust your Son so much that you have to make this post ?
Sent from my pc cos I don't have an i-phone.

It's not that he doesn't trust his son: but things that are easy for the young 'uns, aren't necessarily easy for the well-matured gentleman

Thanks to you all for your replies.

I am working off a lap top now and and use one at work most days. To be honest I much prefer a full size key board, that may have something to do with my very large plumbers hands and clumsy fingers.
I also prefer a full size screen thats deffo to do with my dodgy old eyes.

Spot on 2Sheds its not a question of trust but my son flew the nest many years ago. Although I see him everyday as we work together he has his own lfe to organise without having to look after the old man.

Next question. I can still fire up the old putor and am in the process of removing as much personal data as I need. So is it possible to copy my pics en masse to a memory stick or will I have to do it one at a time.

                        Thanks Colin

Depends how may pictures you have and how big the memory drive is.

Go to the folder where the pictures are

                          Click "Edit"
                          Then "Select All"
                          Then "Edit"
                          Then "Copy"
                          Then go to memory drive
                          Then "Edit"
                          Then "Paste"

                          Simples!

                            Thanks Steve,

Simples if you know how, I didn't. Like I said in my first post on this thread when it comes to putors I live in the dark ages.
