  • New Job not going so Well

As many of you know I recently started a new job basically clearing tables putting them in dishwasher, taking food to tables, so waitressing. On monday I asked if I could leave early last night as it was my daughters school parents evening and our first appointment was at 5.40pm so I would need to leave approx half an hour early although if its busy could be an hour early. I was told it would depend how busy we were as I hadnt given them enough notice , I had only recieved the letter from the school on saturday, fair enough. Yesterday I made sure everything was done, even though I always do. I mentioned to the person ( xy ) who was doing my training that I was hoping to go early as it was my daughters parents evening and she didnt think it would be a problem. So at 5.20pm I asked where xxx was and she was upstairs in the office, xy said she would phone and ask her to come down. XXX came down and had a look around I carried on with what I was doing, then was asked to go with xxx she took me to one side and said she didnt like it cos I had asked xy if I could go, not the case I told her what was said in conversation with xy. xxx made me feel six inches tall asked me to leave without a fuss and she had issues with me. I was gobsmacked as far as I am aware I have done everything and more asked of me. I indeed left like I always do quietly said cheerio see you on tuesday, but I will be phoning this morning and speaking to the owner not xxx and appoligising for the fact that I will not be returning as I will not be spoken to like that, I am after all 54 yrs old not 16 and need telling what to do and how to behave.
    Sorry for rant

I hear more and more instances like this and it makes you wonder what their man management skills are really like.

I always found that if you were accomodating to staff, then you got so much more out of the majority of them.

I always worked on the premise of swings and roundabouts.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

Sorry to hear about your predicament Jackie.

I was in Tesco's the other day where some little upstart of a manager was giving someone the lickings of a dog in front of everyone.

I thought to myself " If you spoke to me like that........ I'd knock yer oot!"

There's two forms of management in my eyes, the carrot and the stick!

The carrot wins hands down every time!

Jackie, what a nasty sounding bunch they are, it sounds like you're well shot of them.

Let's face it, we see more of the people we work with than we do of our families, so if that's the type of people they are, and you can afford to tell them what they can do with their job, good on you.

Good idea to tell the owner what these people are like, too, I bet they're all sweetness and light to him

Rant away girl! I know how you feel honest! These people think they deserve automatic respect Well in my book respect is something that people should work to get!! I give them an inch but they have to earn the mile!

Long story but my boss treats me at times like something he has just wiped off his shoe and sometimes in front of the whole office! (all men by the way makes me look so small! He has selective hearing and will often only hear what he wants to hear or others are saying when they are mucking about shouting out and kicking off because I ask them to do their bit and answer a call from their customer. one lad did this to me he was trying to turn the table to so called jokingly, make me look the fool, boss then takes it out of context and shouted at me and offers me my p45 if I do not want to do my job! that time I had a go back but it fell on deaf ears! Why was I surprised at that!

I want to get another job but is hard! This one is near to home I can be there in 10 mins traffic is runing ok! I hold my boss in pure contempt I have no respect for him what so ever!

so you see I know where yu are coming from on this! I wish you good luck finding another job if don't go back to the other one!

          All the best

My middle son has worked in the caterng industry for several years. For some strange reason he seems to like it. Crap wages, crap hours, trated like crap and in my opinion a crap job. Jackie j, you are definately better off out of there.

The problem with management does not stem from their lack of man management skills. It comes from their arogance, ignorance and the fact that they are safe in the knowledge, that if you walk there are dozens of people ready to take your place. The present economic climate only means that this sort of attitude toward staff will be on the increase.

Sorry to hear that Jackie, but I think you're right - if you can afford to leave, then why do a job that will make you miserable. The leadership skills of this person only seem to include intimidation and humiliation, and that will never be a pleasant working relationship! I hope something else, more fulfilling, comes along soon.

But I think it is typical today employers want your heart & mind for a pittance of a wage.

The person concerned is fairly new herself and is obviously trying to prove herself. The owner is a lovley person and is there most of the time, she is going to loose a lot of staff if she allows this person to carry on the place is crying out for more staff, constantly changing, apart from 3 or four that started at the very begining. The place has only been opened a year. The staff are great even the young girls are ok but typical teenagers. I dont think she likes the fact that I do know what I am doing I have after all been in the catering trade on and off since I was 13 ish and even before that as my parents owned a cafe tho I was too young to work. I get on with most people and even if I dont, I try not to make anything of it. I like to get on with the job in hand. I am best left to my own devices working through what needs doing not jumping on customers the minuet they put their knife and fork down or their cup.
I think she also doesnt like the fact that I am taller than her and this is no way meant to upset anyone.
Going to phone soon wish me luck

I had a similar episode in Asda, but I told the manager off and advised him I was reporting him for bullying, left my trolley and started walking out, I was clapped by other staff and the manager followed me out trying to tell me off. Alas he got it all back with interest and then I rang the company, I have never seen him again and got a fantastic letter of Asda, I hate bullying anywhere and anyone doing it should be sacked therein no retraining , no nothing.

The reason I hate is that when I was diagnosed with MS and went back to work I was bullied out of the job by two managers, but they did it to the wrong person, both lost their jobs.

I have phoned the owner and she was very nice as I expected, thanked me for ringing to let her know. I appoligised for letting her down as I know how busy and short staffed she is, but said I couldnt work with x. She has said I am still welcome as a customer and she wouldnt like to loose me as we have supported her on a weekly basis since day one, and between us spend a lot of money. ( 4 adults and 5 kids plus any extras ). She said she will get back to me about it. I also said I didnt know what wages I was due I have worked over 27 hours but that isnt my main concern. Pay day is today apperently.

Sounds to me like x feels threatened by you, knowing that you have more experience. Probably putting you down makes him/her feel better! I'd go back in there, after all it was only the one incident (wasn't it?) but then, I'm like that. I worked for a bully, he didn't bully me, but one of the guys I worked with who was a bit quiet and insecure. I helped the guy get a better job with someone else who treated him like a person instead of a slave. Trouble with me - I do tend to stick my oar in lol!

I hope it all works out for you Jackie - don't let the b*st*rds get you down!
