  • New BT Scam

info passed onto me, so I'm passing it here. I hope it's not a spam scam

Not me featured in this, but worth everyone knowing...
Received a phone call from BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill.. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £ 118.00 to re-connect at a later date. The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental! I asked... the g......uy's name - he gave me the very 'English' John Peaco...ck with a very 'African' accent - & phone number -0800 0800 152. Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this. AND HE DID !! My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again. Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then. I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT. He hung up. I dialed 1471 -number withheld I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized. So I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently, but it is escalating. Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this. How is it done? This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800 152 which takes you through to BT Business. The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying. (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool many. By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details which include the security number, to be used for larger purchases.

If you do have this situation, ask them to hang up first as it will free the line immediately.

Wow, wasn'r aware of this one, though my friend had someone phone her up - again a very English name but very foreign accent telling her that they had detected a problem on her computer and could fix it if she went on line and went onto a certain website.
She was immediately suspicious as she DOESN'T OWN A COMPUTER but uses her partners laptop when she goes to his place.
I happened to walk in as she was yelling, "HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT???!!!" down the phone to the unfortunate hoaxter...

I had a sales call one teatime. I was in stitches when the very heavily accented chap said "For the purposes of this call, my name is Tony Smith"

Not sure he was supposed to read the entire sentence from his crib sheet!

          It is a real scam:

Someone claiming to be from BT called saying I
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

I haven't had this one but do remember it having been around a while.

I've had a lot of calls recently from someone pretending to be from Microsoft and that there is a problem with my computer, I always ask them where is it....the computer, have they brought me one?

I get at least 4 calls a week asking for a Mr Webb, have done so for about 3 years now, sometimes they really get on my nerves.

It doesn't help that my number is a business number and I always answer it quickly.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

This is a nasty one. The rule is NEVER give credit-card (or any other) details to someone who calls YOU (occasionally we get a call asking for someone to prove their identity for some reason, and yes it CAN be legit (some financial thingy keeps phoning OH like this), but why don't legit companies realise that a savvy person WILL NOT give out that sort of information over the phone, because it COULD be the start of identity fraud!

We have a Thingy on our 'phone to say who is calling. If it's a with-held number, it doesn't get answered.

I got this some months back, a really nasty piece he was too, called me about 10 times after i told him where to go and right while I was trying to get my toddler to sleep - grrrrr!

Friends (computer geeks) suggested 3 responses:
                          1. I don't have a computer
                          2. I have a Mac
                          3. "Really! Oh that's dreadful, I had no idea, I'll just go and get a notepad.." (cover phone lightly and say "Hey Fred, how long did you say we had to keep them on the line to trace the call??")

I never get these types of call. I wish I did, I'd love to play with them on the phone.

My phone also shows up an "International" call - these nuisance calls always are so don't get answered.
