  • My new favourite cookery book

Apologies for the new thread, I tried searching for the recent thread about favourite cookery books but I couldn't find it.

Today the postman delivered me a parcel containing 'Tender - Volume 1' by Nigel Slater.

Now, I will admit that Nigel Slater is one of my least liked food presenters, I just can't get on with his overall manner and effusiveness when describing food and how he likes to cook food. Just be normal, don't whisper and use such dramatic gesticulations and mannerisms.

So, it was with a little uncertainty that I opened this book, had I just wasted £20?

By heck, no! What a fabulous book. I'm hooked. It's reads more like a diary than a cookery book, it's full of interesting facts (did you know that runner beans climb clockwise and all other beans climb anti-clockwise) and all of the recipes 'seem' simple and recipes that I, as a terrible cook, could try myself and no make a complete mess of. This week I am going to try the minced pork and marrow recipe which sounds delicious.

I highly recommend this to anyone, I'm reading it as if it's a novel and I imagine that it would make a wonderful present for a foodie or grow you own-er.

It was certainly money well spent.

I read one of his books "Toast" full of his childhood memories triggered by food. It was a good read.

That's the one, thanks VC. I must learn how to use the search function better!

As well as being a great read, this is also a beautiful book, worthy of a coffee table top.

I have a few favorite cookery books. Mary Berry's cookery Bible, The British Dairy Family cookbook (anyone remember that one? LOL) Paul Hollywood's bread book to name just 3. I just love cooking. Making (almost) everything from scratch, including my own passata from fresh toms, pastry, cakes and bread.
        Just think happy thoughts

I have several favourites depending on what I want to cook. The Readers Digest Cookery Year, Elizabeth David's Yeast Cookery, an ancient Mrs Beeton, Delia's Winter Cooking, The 1st cookery book published by Good Housekeeping after WWII, and the book compiled by myself full of favourite recipes picked up over the years. My eldest 2 got hold of it when they were toddlers and scribbled on the pages, but that just adds to its charm.

I have several of his books. They're lovely. He's lovely on TV too. Very gentle food programs.
