...buying a masher so I always use a rolling pin to mash the potatoes, so we call it 'Smash'

What do you inprovise with and does it have a special name?

I use an empty bottle as a rolling pin. It doesn't have a pet name as its a different one each time.

I don't get round to getting dressed early since I don't work ... I sit round in my 'guessing gown' which is nice and fleecy!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

How do you fit a rolling pin into a saucepan?
Or, do you tip the potatoes out onto your work-surface?

Use the end in the pan, Rocketron! Like a pestle and mortar.

Not all rolling pins have handles, Rocketron. Some are just rounded off lumps of wood. They're also good for pushing fruit through a sieve.

When my wife and I first lived together we didn't have a rolling pin, so used an empty wine bottle.
One day my young daughter (from a previous marriage) asked why we had 7 rolling pins.

I usually use a rolling pin to knock tacks into the wall to hang a picture on,as I can never find a hammer when I want one!

That's all very well Mothhawk, but the rolliing pin doesn't keep the door open.

Some uses for a rolling pin:
                            Cracking black pepper.
Crushing plain biscuits to make a base for cheesecake.
Bunging corks into bottles when making wine.
Flattening bread slices or rolls which are too fat to for the toaster.
                            As mentioned above, tenderising meat.
                            And even...
                            Rolling out pastry sometimes.

But to get back to the point, there are so many things I haven't got round to; the hall cupboard comes to mind, but if I open it and empty everything out I know I'll end up putting most of it back in again. Meantime, we could do with the storage space if only it were decluttered.

turn the pin on it's end and pound the potatoes into submission
