  • My first tick!!!!

Ok- well I know last week I was moaning about my cat with a tick on his face...well I woke up this morning with a red bruise on my leg which was stinging....on closer inspection there was a tiny tick in the centre!!!
( runs round room flapping arms....)

Anyway, it's gnashers weren't too deep as it came out with a quarter turn and a gentle tug.

    even so.....euewww.........

Any advice as to anything I should do now? Antihistamine cream for the stinging?

Gin, you should sip gin - vodka may work but I think gin is best.....

Do you live near deer, there is the very faint possibility of contracting Lyme's disease. I'd advise a visit to your GP.

Yep- there are wild deer where we are in France. We're travelling back to the UK tomorrow, so I might just go and see my GP.

          - actually, having just read some Googled bits and pieces on Lyme's disease, I'm going to make an appointment now for Thursday!

did you get all the head out? we used to burn ticks off,(see i knew there was a reason i never gave up smoking) cos if you pull them it can leave the head inside ....... i recommend vodka, gin is gross, and lots of drugs .... not that i drink much, but when i do it's got to be voddy and pour some on your leg too dunno if it will do anything but alcohol is good for stuff

Yeuch! Pulled many a beastie off the horses, but never myself! Had to get one out of the pony's armpit the other day. Glad he's ok with people being under his belly, as I had to become quite a contortionist! Horrible little blighters, aren't they?

little girl i used to nanny for got 1 once~her mum did as lynda suggested & burnt it out.(lit a match blew it out & just touched the tick with it~think it causes their legs to open~otherwise you could remove the body & leave the legs embedded in yer skin!the little girl had no ill effects but as others have said prob best to be on safe side & see G.P.
also i'd reccommend save the vodka for leg & drink lots of wine!!

I hope you got the entire thing, I doesn't sound like it was been there to long. I found one the other day, right after I got out of bed, it was on my arm the dog had brought a bunch of stuff in. Damn him. Watch out for any redness radiating form the bite, than can be a sign of Lyme's disease. They can really be painful and make the entire body sore. Rubbing alcohol and cortisone cream are probably the best. Hope it doesn't worsen and everything turns out to be okay.

Haha - had one in my scrotum once - OMG : (

My Mum & Dad, both in their 80s, get half a dozen tick bites PER WEEK cos of all the deer around. Ten years ago, I used to scream at them to check for Lyme's Disease, but they reckon that's only if they've been hanging on you for days and if you don't get them out in their entirety. My Dad's made several tools for extraction. I could write a book ; )

thats just made me feel sick - i burnt one off my dog once (i smoke as well Lynda ha ha) and then got vasaline around it, as advised by the vet, so that it slides out easy or the knashers are left and its not nice!!!

poor you - it makes me feel sick, just the thought of it!!

The best way to remove a tick is to smother it in vaseline, then it will recoil its sucker and suffocate.Works on the cats everytime without any infections.

cats fine humans most definately not.

Despite being commonly-known advice, do NOT smother ticks with vaseline or alcohol, and do NOT burn them off. Ticks are able to regurgitate if frightened and cause transmission of bacteria.
DO use tweezers to grab the tick close to the skin. Do NOT twist or jerk the tick, as this may cause the mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin.Gently pull straight up until all parts of the tick are removed.
After removing the tick, wash your hands with soap and water. Clean the tick bite with an antiseptic such as iodine scrub, rubbing alcohol, or water containing detergents
                              .
