  • Missing Kestrel!!

Please can I appeal to any grapes in the Weston super Mare/Worle/St Georges area to keep their eyes peeled for DD's Kestrel?

Freya is four months old and went missing on Saturday 12th September. She's wearing anklets but not bells, and has two white talons on her right foot, the rest being black. She's got her kingfisher blue IBR ring on too.

She's quite tiny, so is very hard to spot. Being totally handreared she is very friendly and may arrive in your garden. She doesn't fear dogs, cats or chickens which may be to her detriment. If she does land in your garden please don't feed her as she has a very specialised diet.

Please PM me as soon as you see her, I will be constantly signed in. I'd love to put a phone number up here, but it's not wise.

My DD is distraught, and the house is not the same without Freya.

    Thanks!

    Jules

Thanks everyone. I can't say how much we miss her. Cheesy as it sounds, it really is a huge priviledge to share your home with a BOP.

The phone has been really busy as the local paper did a lovely article. We've gone straight out to some sightings and have mapped each one carefully with times. There have been calls reporting three sightings within two streets about a mile away (less as the kestrel flies) but by the time we got the calls it was dark, so Freya would roost up and we wouldn't see her.

DD will be out with glove & lure at first light to try again in that area. At least we know that Freya's feeding herself, as she would have perished by now if she wasn't. This is a double-edged sword, because if she's feeding herself, we may never catch her.

I don't think DD will ever give up searching. She has missed Week 0 of Uni this week, but her tutors are very understanding.

          I'll keep you posted.

Good luck with your search. If she's feeding herself, though, I'd see that as a success, however painful it is to lose her. It's not often a hand-reared bird adapts successfully to the wild and if she does, there will be little Freyas for years to come.

Oh dear- you must be sick with worry.
I see she is ringed- what's her number reference?
                Fingers crossed she's OK

SLO I've said this to DD. If we continue to get sightings we know she's feeding herself and is doing what she was intended to do. Yes, we'll miss her, but in some ways being out there, being free, is better.

Nicos, We have her IBR ring number but we can't give it out because, in order to prove a lost bird is yours, you have to recite the ring number. If other people know it, they can claim the bird is theirs and chaos will ensue

DD has been out calling with her lure and using her whistle, but no sign of Freya today.

                    Update..

.....we've had three sighting in the same very small area now. We dashed out this evening as a lady saw Freya swoop across her garden. The lady got a very clear view of Freya's anklets and leg ring, so it's definitely her.

We had no luck this evening, as the traffic noise and noise from the children in the park would have put Freya off coming to us. DD is going back at dawn tomorrow.

                    Fingers crossed!

I know how this is - we spent many a day/night calling for lost birds - kestrel included. I do really hope you find her but as many have said, at least she is still alive and feeding herself. Fingers crossed for you all.

Hope you find her soon Jules but at least from the sightings you're getting she sounds as though she's happy & healthy.
