  • Man the lifeboats

Woke this morning to the delightful sound of dripping, nay pouring water. Perplexed I left the warmth of my bed to find my kitchen under water. Deluged I tell you.
Quick inspection tells me that a purging valve from the central heating system has succumbed to the cold in the night.
Fortunately the tap turning the mains into the house has frozen solid so cant turn that off. The tap feeding the central heating has also frozen solid so cant turn that off.
As mentioned in previous threads by others, the fact you live in a previously owned builders house means nothing. The boiler has been installed without a single tap to turn off.
Oh, forgot to mention, where the water is entering my kitchen, is in fact, straight down through the junction box. I kid you not, I couldnt have placed it more directly in line if I had tried.
When the last Mme Leponge departed she took all the towels and bedding with her and so I am using my own bedsheet, 2 towels and a flannel to try and mop up the inondation.
On the plus side, whilst I was up in the loft looking for the problem, I did find 2 more pillowcases that she hadnt seen, so at least they will come in handy.
Phoned my insurance company and explained, I am covered which is fine, but they should get someone here by the end of the week?????????????????
"End of the week?" I enquired somewhat peeved, trying once again to explain to the young lady that I in fact had a large boat, manned by thousands of pairs of differing animals and a bloke with a large beard currently moored up alongside my cooker.
"Is that not convenient sir? Perhaps the weekend?"
    Hmmmm
Mikey, slugs it may kill, but its not doing my newly painted kitchen walls or my general sense of humour much good either.
And I cant even look at Seahorse's legs anymore to cheer me up either, as she has now morphed into Lady Chatterley. Pah!!

Sorry to hear of your troubles bobleponge. Had a similar situation many years ago. Water every where but no stop taps to turn off the supply. Aleviated the problem by hammering the pipe flat. Didn't stop the deluge completely but certainly slowed down the rate of flow.

              Hope things are sorted soon.

Oh no, that's not good news at all.

Do be careful if you decide to hammer pipes and things as the insurance co can be a bit funny about things like that, saying you have caused the damage etc. We had a flood in the bathroom (old house), the pipes had been tiled over and then panelled (not by us), so to get to the stopy thing we had to rip off the panel and the tiles.... then they wouldn't pay out as we had caused the damage! They only paid for the flooring.

We also had a flood when the dormers leaked and were without a lounge or anywhere to sit for 3 months while it was sorted, that was not good too. So I know what it's like.

Bet you wished you'd stayed in the warm with the wild animals!

I am currently sitting here waiting for the arrival of the new washing machine which is replacing the one that flooded the kitchen on Saturday.
At least I had a fair few towels to mop up with though Bobleponge(Sorry, Noah isn't it?) . Although, having said that, our brains must be soggy because yesterday when we we disconnecting the old one, the outlet pipe which I thought I had secured to the machine, fell on the floor and the foulest smelly water poured out all over the kitchen floor AGAIN.
In our panic I shot upstairs and got the fresh towels out of the bathroom and used those. I
now have both lots of washing that the machine part washed on Saturday (both lots? don't ask!!) plus all the wet mopping up towels, plus the usual wash. Yep - it's that New Year time again!!
Better off than my sister is today though. Even as I type this she has a man ripping out the kitchen floor and a plumber trying to repair HER washing machine which had apparently been leaking for weeks. Can the year get worse???

Finally got the water off, after the sun peeped its head over.
On the plus side, my kitchen floor, once I finally get rid of its watery covering, will be the cleanest its been in years.
No heating or hot water, but at least dry.
Bonus, its forecast as the coldest night of the spell tonight. Oh joy.
Thanks for all the support, its been somewhat trying today.
