At long last Ive done some gardening!

    At long last Ive done some gardening!

    I was out for a couple of hours today and finaly managed to get in some of my long awaited gardening. I was shocked by how much damage the snow had done but it seems that I havent actually lost anything to it. My passion fruit is very bedraggled and looking sorry for its self but after a quick trim and some new ties its going to be fine. My nana evergreen (brought by my hubby as a tribute to his nana) has had some branches snapped off despite me going and shaking the snow off on a regular basis. and just 1 ceramic pot has cracked out of about 10 ( touch wood as there is still time for more of that).
    But all in all thats the only real damage the snow did.

    I was out for my first session of 2010 - pruning shrubs this week - three big bags of pruning taken away by the council! (I needed to get the branches off the window so that what sunlight I have gets in!) It is good to make a start, isn't it!
    Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

      I have had a good look round too. Got lots of bulbs coming up, garlic doing nothing but Lanbs lettuce charging away. Salad for us soon

        i noticed my lambs lettuce growing away too and i noticed some chives through in their pot
        i got some leaves picked up and put in their mulching bin the other day which is aswell as its snowing heavy here today

          Lost my blueberry pot, its a bit of a mess out there really! Bright lights chard still doing fine, and some thing which I think is summer rocket is still there??
          I thnk th squirrels got my vine, got lots of cutting too, all dug up and thrown around! Luckily barley sugar kindly sent me some vine cuttings which are snugly in there pots now!
          We inherited a lot of whats in our garden and Ive decided to get rid and redo. Want to look at planting more architectual plants, and shadeloving stuff. Anything sun loving will have to go in pots or ammis compo bags
          There are loads of leaves in soggy wet piles everywhere! Thought I'd cleaned them all up!
          Also the one thing which is doing well is the couch grass on our new quarter allotment, its making a comeback

            I finally planted out loads of bulbs out that I've had for months. Fingers crossed they'll just come up a bit later!

            I've still got fruit tree pruning to attempt soon.

            The hedges need trimming and everything else could do with a tidy up, but I'll leave that until spring, so I don't disturb/expose my pest destroying army.

            Oh and I have some Alpine Strawberries to sow. Out of my stupidly big seed collection, they're they only thing that should be sowed now.

              *cue sexy music* They're not just any pile of leaves, they're M &... er wildlife habitat leaves.

              Don't be too tidy. If you really want rid of them, you could just mulch your beds with them. Leaf litter is the natural flooring in woodland and a lot of insects live in/under it.

                Im being allowed to dig over part of my back garden and turn it into a mini allotment (thanks to my fantastic landlord) and i made a start by digging up a small row of turf, and tomorrow and next week I WILL dig up all the rest and start marking rows for my veg i intend to grow.
                Life isnt about surviving the storm.....But learning to dance in the rain.

                  I was planning on gardening today, but we were covered with a blanket of the white stuff during the night. Typical, day off weather not suitable - Weather suitable I'm stuck at work.

                    Have the piles that I placed about, but then there are the ones on top of algi ridden concrete! Sl....ip! I don't think its possible for me to be too tidy! If tidy was ever linked to my name it would be an imposter!

                      Did the BGBW today (see wildlife), looked at everything including lying snow and thought, maybe next weekend.....

                        lol, glad to hear it. That sounds like my garden style.

                        Leaves make good potting compost if you have any left over.

                          Everything in my garden has been frozen for the last few days, so apart from feeding and watering the birds there's nothing else I can do outside.

                            Im not always that tidy either but I use the leaves from my couple of trees (and the several hundred trees in the local area) in some of my compost bags. They are great for keeping the damp in.
