  • Limoncello disaster

No, its not a 'Juicey' type thread mods, hence why I put it here in 'Chit Chat'

Last Saturday we decided to make a batch of 2-week Limoncello, and it was happily doing its thing in a dark cupboard at the new house.
Anyhoo...with everything thats been happening this last week we'd sort of forgotten about it, until last night I said to my OH 'Have you shaken the Limoncello recently?'

'Ooh, no I haven't' he said.

He dashed into the Utility room, picked up the plastic cereal box its brewing in, whacked his hand on the shelf above and dropped the whole bloomin lot over the floor!!

    Smells nice though

We must have had a 6th sense about that, hence the plastic cereal box idea. However, now I'm going to send him to Wilcos for a nice Demijohn instead. That'll learn 'im!!

"Clumsy" stuff like that drives me crackers. I hate it when it happens, which is quite often for me. I seem to be getting clumsier as I grow older.

I had to mop the floor again today myself.

I'm syphoning wine from DJs into wine bottles (30 of them) and I can't see the wine through the green glass, so it keeps spraying all over the kitchen. It's making me very cross

Syphon wine into 1 gall bucket - it will fit all the contents of the dj so you only have to worry about the dj end to make sure you are not hoovering up any gunk.

Pour nice clear wine from bucket into each bottle using a funnel. You can do this in a controlled fashion at eye level (wine bottle on sink drainer). If you find the bucket heavy to pour from, dip a jug in and pour from that into the funnel. Nice and slow, and you can either hear when the bottle is getting full, or measure about 750ml from the jug.

This is a TOP TIP from Flum - and has saved me much wastage of wine and cleaning of the kitchen floor.

Remember to steralise bucked, syphon & jug (a whizz round with boiling water does it for me).

Hazel, you're absolutely right and it's a top tip, but ... the bucket is full of elderberry & banana. I'll be more organised next time.

You could still syphon it into a jug, then pour from jug into bottle?

The OH usually does the bottling on a load of newspapers, which are then on top of one of those plastic 'potting sheet' type things. I set that up a couple of years ago, coz he does the bottling in the dining room and I was getting fed up of 'pink patches' on the beige dining room carpet!

PB, that's a real shame about your Limoncello I had an exploding bottle disaster with my raspberry vodka one year, really disappointing. And flippin' sticky to clean up!!

Very sticky - but he made the mess, so he gets to clean it up and then start all over again Wow I'm harsh!!
