  • Last of a dying breed

I was raised by four parents (since mine divorced) and all of them were sticklers for etiquitte, particularly table manners. I'm sure it's something that people just aren't aware of anymore.
Has anyone got any classic rules of etiquitte that they observe regularly?

    The most common ones are:
Holding doors open, particularly for women.
Not passing people on stairs (although I think that's more superstition than manners).
Not speaking with mouth full or eating with mouth open.
I also never discuss the finer details of any of my relationships which none of my friends can handle, they always try and trick me into giving up some information (never succeeded though).

The far less commonly known or observed ones include:
Not cutting bread with a knife
Standing when a woman enters or leaves the room

I was once rebuked by a woman for holding a door open for her. I just responded, "you may not be a lady, but I was raised to be a gentleman", and walked off the other way.

I used to be affronted when men offered me a hand to get, eg, into a boat, off a big step etc etc but was told off for it and it was pointed out that the guy is nly trying to do something nice for me. So now I say 'thanks very much' and accept a door held open for me, and I will also hold a door open for a man. Nothing to do with being the 'fairer sex', it's just good manners.

Chewing food with your mouth open isn't just rude, it's disgusting!

I also always break a bread roll with my hands rather than cut it, just one of those things I was brought up with, but I wouldn't look down on anyone who cut it with a knife

I was also told by my dad that when a man and woman walk down a road together, the man should be next to the road to catch splashes from vehicles driving through puddles! Sounds like a hang-over from the Vicotrians...

"Not cutting bread with a knife" What's a bread knife for then?! And are you supposed to get better results with a spoon?

Sloppy eating is disgusting though, there's no need for it. The only possible excuse is if you have a really bad cold and can't breathe, but we were always taught that if you're ill enough to have to eat like that, then you're too ill to sit at the table!

Mr HF opens the car door for me and walks on the road side of a pavement and I love this and thank him for it!

I will always hold a door for someone, male or female it's polite.

I don't want people to hold the door open for me because I'm a woman but I do want them to do it because I'm behind them and I'd do the same for them. This is basic manners. Standing when a woman enters is a bit freaky for me although I would always stand up when a Client entered the room for a meeting to go and shake their hand when stood. Eating habits matter also, it's not that difficult and if taught at an early age then it's with you for life.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I always eat soup from the back of a shallow soup bowl....but if it's a deep one, I just get stuck in.

I have a thing about bad table manners/eating generally:

Many years ago I used to attend a grammer school. When a member of staff entered any room we were all expected to stand and wait to be told to sit down.

Years later, after retiring, I went back to school. This time to a comp that allowed adults to join sixth form classes. On my first day I stood as our teacher came into the room. The rest of the class just sat there and looked at me as though I'd just beamed down from another planet.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

Mrs BM allways has her first cuppa brought to her in bed.....Don't know if that's etiquette or just me.
