  • Lasage bed advice

    Hi Peeps
    School garden advice time again...sigh!

We have a large bed, neglected, stuffed full of spent bulbs and old compacted soil. We have no money.
Following a great idea from Two sheds we have decided to lasane plant it. Now I know you use different layers of brown and green materials, the usual suspects, but do you think we can include hoover bag contents (as peeps use that when growing toms)? and tumble drier fluff?

Tumble drier fluff is probably way off! But Im sure you can use it for something!!!

    Yours in anticipation as ever

I do, it all goes on the compost heap.

I put it on the compost heap, but I wouldn't put it on a school's bed, no. Elfin Safety would be all over you (ours have banned the growing of spuds because they are "toxic")

Don't waste them if you can help it. Fork over the soil and add good stuff (your lasagne mix).

The bulbs can be dug up, split and replanted somewhere else.

Thanks guys, so basically I can use it but not at school! Bugger bugger! Was looking for a way to bump up the layers as the involvement of parents is quite limited and Im worried we woont get enough peelings etc!

Oh well!! Best to keep on the side of caution!

Thanks for the idea though two sheds! We have literally no money at all, thinking of writing a book called frugal gardening...!

Good idea re bulbs, will get on to that

Once the weeds start growing you will. I am already pulling up loads of chickweed and annual meadow grass

btw, you don't need to fill a raised bed all at once

Just a thought to get more parents donating their peelings.
Not sure how big your school is/how many classes but you could perhaps get the staff to organise a competition 'Which Class can Fill a Bucket First'...kiddies get so competitive such little things.

Hey thats a good idea! Need to get it passed staff first! Think although they want it to happen they see it as more work for them! Run a mile when they see me coming, walking off as Im talking to them and now apparantly cant open emails due to a virus!!!!!

But thats a graet idea. Have a mtg today at 3.15 so will try and get some enthusiasm going and look at the practicalities.

                    Cheers me dear! xx

Have you spoken to the school dinner ladies about them saving peelings for you? Even if most of the food is pre-prepared for them I expect they'd still have at least carrot and potato peelings you could use.

                            Will do Judy! X

Just to let you know 3 of us went on a charm attack yeasterday at the local garden centre (not that local really!) and came away with 10% off a meatl dustbin for scrap collection, some wicker dispaly baskets that the kids can plant up to sell at the summer fair, lots of pots and........a fork lift truck load of slightly ripped grow bags!! Aprrox 40!!!! Grand eh!

Caretaker was peeved though said hed have to move them as the parents would nick them! Not one word of encouragement! Which considering I had to slap him on he back for saving a couple of cardboard boxes for us is a bit rich! Offered to stay and help move em but he refused!!

Huston we have compost!!!! Mission is a go!!!!

Big thanks to evryone that has sent seeds, plants, ideas and good old fashioned motivation. Youve kept me on the rails when I wasready to get off! xxx
